autometer 6806 tach problems

Installed it last night and it won't read. Tach won't zero out when you turn the key on like most tachs do. I got four notches in my balancer and the probe is mounted at 30 thounsandths away from the balancer

Is the prob magnetic pick? Is this the diesel tack or regular monster tach for a gasser?

If it is a gasser tach they normally take a tone ring on the balancer with magnets glue around the ring, like the 1 used for a MSD ingnition. other then that you dont have it hooked up right
