I have a bone stock 2001 4x4. I was changing the oil this morning and I like to take the inlet tube off to get easier access to the oil filter. As soon as I popped it off I knew something wasn't right. It's completely black inside. I wiggled the tip of the impellar and it has .090"-.100" slop in it up/down, left/right. I'm guessing that's not good. I called my local shop today and they said:
1) Stock rebuilt @ about $400
2) SA 2000 turbo @ about $1700
I would like to get an upgraded turbo, but I really am not ready to spend quite that much. The truck is getting a Dave Goerand transmission and 4" exhaust in the next couple weeks. Any suggestions on my turbo situation?

that's a more critical tolerance than radial play... the shaft will ride on a layer of oil and as long as the wheels aren't hitting the housings, you're "alright"

but if it's sloppy in/out, the differential between boost and drive pressure can cause the shaft to thrust.

it sounds like the turbo is probably on its way out, but if your axial (in/out) play isn't horrible, you've probably got a fair amount of life left

I have a Hx-35 that is in good shape and a 4" dp to go with it if you need a cheap one.

Did it look like this?

For a stock truck, the stock turbo is hard to beat, now if you plan to mod it more down the road something like the 35 Mountaineer has would be a perfect little upgrade. An HX-35 with a small set of injectors, built tranny and box of choice will make for one kick arse daily driver.

not ideal, but not totally "abnormal"... especially if the truck was run with a clogged air filter for an extended period of time

I plan on putting a programmer on it. That is another decision. I really like that edge with attitude package, but my local shop doesn't recommend it for my truck. He says that he likes the smarty box for my truck.

honestly, for a 2nd gen, I'd probably lean towards the Edge Attitude... my buddy has one on his '01 and loves it. the HX35 would be a nice, inexpensive turbo upgrade over your HY

Thats not normal. Thats a blown seal. It had side to side shaft play but no in/out play.

Sounds like you need to find another shop, they're trying to empty your wallet.
You can get a used HX35 off fleabay for cheap. or get a rebuild kit even cheaper. Get rid of the HY35 and get a HX35, do you have gauges? If not might want to look at the Adrenaline with Pulse.
