my 2000 is making a popping sound out of the intake. I took off the air horn to eliminate the turbo and exhaust side of things. and the popping stopped coming out of the air cleaner, but still popped out of the intake on the left side so now the only thing left to check is the intake valves. I did check the valve clearances there all good. I don't really want to pull the head motor only has 125,000 miles on it. can i be missing something simple ?

Either a bent/misplaced pushrod, dropped valve seat or worse?

Thanks Joe. i will start by pulling the lifters and push rods, and go from there. If i pull the head is it worth it to have it fire ringed? it not a hot rod truck i use it to pull my 35 ft fifth wheel around. and what gasket to use a stock or marine?

I would o-ring it unless you have a shop that will warranty the fire rings. The marine gasket is the only one Cummins has used since ~2005. If you order a new one from Snedge for your ESN, it will be the marine-style. If you want to hold off on spending the cash for studs, some guys around here get by with orings and stock bolts.

edit: keep in mind that I could be wrong. I'd pull the injectors and inspect them too. On a different engine a 'popping' noise on the intake was a bad injector. On another the engine ate a few main bearings.

OK thanks i will get it o ringed instead, as for studs i don't see over 40 lb of boost anyways so i will stay with stock bolts for now. thank you for all your help.

how can you tell if a injector is bad by looking at it or do i need to take it to a shop to have it tested? any thing i can do to find the problem and not have to pull the head for nothing would be great.

Normally I'd just swap in a known good set. If I do send out stock injectors, they go to Columbus Diesel Supply here in Columbus, OH.
