Well I turned my traction bars into an art peice last night, so its time to make a new set.

I guess 2" DOM isnt strong enough, so Im gonna have to find something else that holds up.

One Idea I had was to just get 2 peices of 1/4" thick square stock and make them non adjustable, just bolt it right in.

Anyone got any other Ideas other than a straight 2" bar????

X2,

2" DOM is plenty strong but if your wall thickness was thin it won't work. My original set up was 1/2" wall you couldn't bend it :)

if its the set ive seen on it.....yes. i believe they were to long so he cut and shortened them up.

Chromoly .120 wall will work building my new set out of that this week n a ladder bar set up. Useing 3/4" joints too with brakets from ballistic fabracations.

Well he did say chromoly. That is some tough stuff! .120 does seem a little thin. I would say .250 would be good though maybe 3/8"

what do you mean? like 2 pieces of two 3foot sections welded together to make one long bar? that not good.

i think firemed is right. they cut them and put a small sleeve over the joint and welded around it.

traction bars

i put mine together with 2 1/4" DOM .500 wall tubbing and 1" threaded 2 1/2" dia. Currie Jonny Joints and their tubbing nut to weld to the ends. i had $50 in each end with joint and tube end. and the bars were $120 a piece. and 1/2" crs plate for the mounts was just laying around free. $500 for a set of bars that i hope will be more than enough is a good price in my book.

i think his bars would have been ok but i havent seen them to see where they bent. i bet they bent at the sleeve. he will need some nice new ones with everything hes done to the truck now. i bet if hed of had that new clutch he would of bent them along time ago.

when i had some on mine i used schedule 80? (1/4)... cant think how thick 80 is but it was about 1/4 or 3/8 then i just slid in the ends of a tractor third arm (3 point hitch) and cut them off.

Schedules depend on the size of pipe.
1.5" schedule 80 pipe is about .2" Been there done that. Friend broke his, and mine flexed too much. 2" DOM .5" wall tubing. 3 years and no issues.

I bent 2" 1/4 wall DOM chromoly. Zstroken should remeber that.:rockwoot:

I presently use 2" X 3" 3/16 wall rectanglar tubing. Stronger and lighter. I only use a heim on the frame side.

I did have to splice them. But we have a slug on the inside and wraped on the outside. They bent about mid bar from getting all 4 tires off the ground at full tilt boogie!!!

My 3rd link ends are still good so I can still use those. Ill stop by the local welding shop to see what they got lying around!

I still got out a lot better than most guys did! Oh well, I aleays knew I would have to make a new set one of these days.

lol, dam jeff. thats a good little bow in there. hell you could almost just come off the top of the axel and join it right at the bow.
