Black smoke at start up and high idle?

My work truck is a 2001 H.O. 6speed.....only thing done to the motor is an edge ez and a 3in straight pipe(had it on there when I got it)the motor has 200,000miles on it and its on its 3rd clutch....over the past few weeks it has puffed out some black smoke at start up and will idle at 900 rpms all day everday no matter what the temp is outside? is this just normal for a high mileage truck or should I be worried....no smoke out of the valve cover either?dont know much about the 2nd gen truck to much only have worked with them

i would check and re-set the APPS, and check fuel pressure.

what is the APPS and how do you re-set it?

APPS-accelerator pedal position sensor. Unhook the batteries and let them drain down for an hour or so. Hook them back up, turn they key to on, depress the gas pedal and SLOWLY raise it back up. That is it.
