On a buddies 2001 24 valve...right in between cylinders 5 and 6 about a 1/4 inch wide. I pulled the head off tonight and discovered this to be what was causing his miss/smoke.

The only thing fuel and timing wise he is running is a smarty...any ideas on what caused it to blow out between cylinders?

All the injectors look and function perfect and spray patterns were down in the bowl. Think the head is warped and needs checked out?

There might be a few contributing factors. Drive pressure, not letting it warm up before beating on it, improper tq on studs/bolts, warped head...overheating.

Stock turbo?
Stock manifold?
Boost numbers?
DP numbers?
Has the head ever been touched? Bolts, studs, gasket...

Stock turbo, manifold, injectors, and head...stock head bolts torqued to stock specs.

If I remember correctly the previous owner burnt down cylinder 5 and had the shop I now work at repair it (2 or 3 years ago).

I have no idea for drive pressure...boost pressure max is 38 or 39...if I had to bet I would assume either the head or block is not true and caused the blow-out...

but I'm open and curious as to anyone's ideas of what else may have caused it

If I had to bet...I'd bet on your bet. :Cheer:

A straight edge/feeler gauge will be the tattle tell if the head is within spec. Do you know if they decked the block or milled the head?

Yell at me when you get the head checked out. I can oring it for you.

I guess he's going to sell this truck as soon as it's running...so we're just going to clean everything up and put a new head gasket in and let it go...

But he just bought a 12 valve and we have a massive pile of goodies...so I'll hit you up whenever the head gasket lets go on it :rockwoot:
