Boost problem..?

I just got the truck a couple of days ago and everything seemed fine till I took it on the highway. I'm not seeing anything past 9# of boost at WOT, prior to the accident it would boost 35-38#.
Once I'm locked in OD, the truck smokes more than a modded 12v. From 45-80mph the smoke never clears and it takes pretty long to get there.

I took it back to the body shop and there tech tells me "now with the spearco intercooler it's going to smoke more and you'll need a boost controller to boost more than 10#" he knows about this because he has a turbo car :bang

I thought that someone might of stuck a rag in one of the intercooler pipe's and forgot about it. Anything else that would cause something like this?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice

Def got a big leak some where, check 4 of you pipe clamps and if you can get a 4" piece of pipe or PVC plug to drill and put a air fitting in the end so you can clamp it on the front of your turbo and pressurize the system to find your leak very easily.

I think he needs an education on diesel power.

And yes a boost leak , loose clamp or clamps. Misaligned elbow at turbo or the oring missing.

did you slap the guy in the mouth for being an idiot?

Should of but this was over the phone, I had to get back to work so I left them the truck to check it out.

Thanks Brett, I've seen pics of that before but I've never fabbed one up. It looks pretty simple, I'll just need to get the parts from a hardware store.

x2, I tried to explain and tell him that he couldn't compare his turbo gasser to my truck. It has to be a major leak, with the amount of fuel I'm pushing, it should be boosting a lot more than that.

Heck factory it boosts 20psi. I'd imagine a leak that big you'd be able to hear it.

if you don't find one, have the intercooler pressure tested!! or it could have cracked one of the IC pipes

Thanks guys, finally found and fixed the leak. I could of sworn the leak was due to something from the accident but it wasn't.

I made the tool that Brett helped describe, from the hardware store for $8. I borrowed an air compressor from my neighbor and since my boost gauge isn't fixed mounted, I pulled it out of the cab and had it on top of the cowl.

When I hooked up the compressor, the gauge wouldn't even hold 2# and the leak barely made any noise. I ran my hand along the piping and everything was fine. When I ran my hand along the intake horn I felt some air and the leak was coming from the intake plate gasket.

I removed the factory fuel filter canister when the Fass was installed 5 months prior to the accident. The two bolts that hold the canister on to the intake plate were missing and the boost must of pushed the gasket out :bang. I knew about this before the boost leak but I thought it didn't seem to affect it since it was able to push 35+lbs of boost before.

Bought the gasket and two bolts from Cummins for $22, removed lines, intake horn, TPS and everything in the way. Finished up in about an hour and when I pressure tested the system again, the tool blew off the turbo inlet. Now I'm making 40# with the adrenaline on PL00 and with out TC lock up :rockwoot:

Again I want to thank you guys, I tried having it fixed at a local shop this morning but they wanted me to drop it off and they might have it fixed by tomorrow afternoon. I know this would of cost me 200+ and it would of taken more down time, so I'm grateful.

And that is why I love boards like this, helping folks, glad you found the problem :rockwoot:

Those things are sure handy to have, bet that thing made some noise if there pressure built up when it poped out.
