i am working on bracing my hitch on my truck i have heard of putting a 3x3 angle on the top and welding that to it just looking for other suggstion

3x3 bracing from verticle to verticle, weld it very well to the center portion of the hitch. Then take some 3/4x3/4 and go from the lowest portion of the reciever to the front part of the verticle. Bulletproof setup, been 3+ years on mine. If you look at the design of the stock hitch you can see that there is no way to rip the 2x2 channel out of the verticle plates, unless the center breaks at the welds, and that is where they always seem to fail. Putting the 3x3 on top and welding it to the center and sides takes care of that, you are distributing the force along the 2x2.

For those that may want to run a spare tire under the bed in the off season, the angled bracing 1x1 or 3/4x3/4 will interfere with the tire mounting. Atleast it would have on mine... just an FYI...

yes it does, i throw my spare in the bed when i need it. making the braces shorter and running them on a little less of an angle could allow for room for the spare.

Just put a "donut" tire under there! $.02 That'd be sexy on a diesel!

Good point!

This has me thinking...I think I will just modify my braces to something that gives, that way I can squeeze the spare tire in, and a side benefit if it is a hard hooking sled, my hitch can flex so I won't be abusing my truck as much. :)

i cant fit my spare tire under my truck to big lol and the exhaust is in the way
