Started I broke 2 teeth off the spider gears so I had a good set from another axle so I threw them in and at 260 feet lastnight I heard a loud pop.Removed rear cover and all the spiders are demolished. I thought I was below the horsepower limit for this stuff but now what. What's the best way to fix this!

if i was you i would either drop tire size or get taller gearing. either an aam 11.5 with 3.73 or go to a 4.10 gear.

where you from? i am sure someone knows of a really good place to get work done around you

I run 4.10 / 5 speed 3rd low and I have busted mine 2 times in 3 pulls.I have to much aggressive tire but there tall ,I'm getting way better wheel speed but broke parts ............So I am going to change my set up asap....
What would welding the spider gears up , help not breaking?

Welding the spiders correcly will stop the spider gear breaking! After welding they become part of the carries, so to speek. The locker thing that people talk about work fine...but is an expencive way of geting the same results as welding the spiders! IMO a locker still has moving parts, moving parts can break, thats why i prefer welding...cheap and no moving parts to break!

If you weld it, you are pretty much done on the street though.

Are Dana 70 limited slip spider gears the same as Dana 80 limited slip spider gears?

Why would you be done on the street? Iv drove a BUNCH of my trucks on the road with welded rear ends! Alittle cherp around corners but thats it! Better that a detroit....popn and bangn around corners...no thanks! Detroits will break in a puller anyway...

Welded rear ends on the street will make for busted axles and other stuff.
I have a welded rear end and would never have another on the street. I would have thought that with all the weight in the front the truck would not even notice it. The tires didn't chirp, they hopped when ever you turned sharply at low speeds.

One of the big reasons for detroits failing while pulling is if you break an axle.

Go detroit or ARB.

Well obviously you can drive it on the street welded, but its just a bad idea IMO. For one you will wear your tires out very fast.

For another, have fun pulling a load! You will either be breaking axles or other rear end parts. All that strain has to go somewhere, and when you have a loaded goosneck on a truck with a welded rear, good luck getting the tires to spin to relieve the pressure.

TeddyBear had a detroit true trac in his puller for about 2 years. It was a limited slip unit, and worked great. It was really quiet and always pulled with both rear tires while pulling.

I just think there are much better ways to go about getting the rear end to hold up on a truck that you drive on the street. If you arent driving it on the street, then by all means, weld it.
