Building 02 for mileage/towing

My recently retired mother is looking to purchase a travel trailer and visit the country. She bought her 02 brand new, and has kept it up very well. It has just over 100k on the clock, and runs like a champ, but could always use that little extra kick. Her main concern is the mileage. She would like to improve on her empty mileage, it gets about 17 mpg all around as it sits. In turn, we both feel that the towing mileage might improve some too. I am looking more from the towing aspect, what all it will need to pull 8-10k lbs around the country reliably on a constant basis.

Tuners that are designed for towing, tranny upgrades and so forth, post up your suggestions. I'm new to the Duramax tuning world, used to actually having to turn wrenches to increase power output.

4" exhaust, go to kennedydiesel.com and do the air box mod, get a PPE economy tuner or EFI Live with a good tow tune from somewhere like socal diesel.
