Buying a used VP44

Well my friend Justin Trimble told me about this site and he said its a good site to get help. I have a 01 Cummins with about 150,000 miles on it and I think the injection pump finally went out. Would it be ok to buy a used one for like 400+150 for install then buy a FASS for 500 before I do any performance upgrades so it will help the new used pump. Running a smarty on level 7 for one night is what first starting messing it up then I had been running a Superchips 3705 for a month on high performance. I turned to truck off to get my codes clear since I had code 613? show up, injection pump timing failure. After I cleared the codes, the truck wouldn't start up then it was throwing 4 codes involving the injection pump. So I think its finally dead and it has been idling a little funny since I also got some bad diesel. Does anyone have any comments about getting a used pump?

not a good idea unless you know the seller/truck. original pumps weren't that great so boshe started to upgrade specs as time went on. the latest spec VP44 is pretty trouble free and gets better mileage/performance !

is one of the reason the pump don't last long is because they loose fuel pressure so if I get one with low miles, then put a FASS on it, won't it prolong the life of the pump?

Not if the pump was already damaged or worn down before, yes one of the problems that the VP44 would fail do to not enough psi going to the pump, but i have seen pumps with a FASS and Holley's and the Glacier lift pumps and they still fail, i would start off with a new VP44 and go from there and start out fresh.

Correct.... Once a VP sees low pressure the degradation of it's health begins.... You could buy a pump that is running right now but it was starved for fuel a while back.... it's already rolling down hill and your going to buy into the same mess you have right now.

If you get a NEW reman make sure it never sees under 7PSI fuel pressure and you will get the most life and performance out of your investment.

If your pump had ever seen less that 7 or 8 psi then your problems started their. The smarty put stress on the pump. A good pump could handle this but a pump that has had low fuel pressure wont.

That guy who's smarty I borrowed, I'm gonna blame part of its failure there, I'm not gonna mention any names Trimble, J/K

I am sure there are a lot of people that would be on my side just because your lift pump went to **** and your inj pump had seen less than 7psi.

smarty does NOT tap the wire and fuels WITHIN factory limits. therefore it cannot "kill" a pump. but to ask anything on its last legs for max output is a recipe for disaster. your trans/clutch would be next!

Used VP..................SCARRRRRRRRYYYYYYY!:evil :evil :evil :evil

Nah. I'm bout to throw one on the truck and see if that solves my issue.

well I also drove for about two weeks with a dead lift pump that I didn't know it was but I'm gettin a new pump installed for 1500 Wednesday thanks to jktcummins

I ran my first one for 20k on a dying pump with negative pressure and the wire tapped. Ran that pump for 120k miles.

hey if your looking for a new vp, i am pulling mine off for a hotrod. it was replaced about a year ago, got a fass to fuel it in november. im 2nd owner but it seems to do extremely well. pm me

well I got mine installed and runs really good, still does like a thing like it hesitates when I tap the gas quick but that may be normal, idk, its been several months since it has ran right

I have installed two used VP44's and both trucks are running great. (one for almost 2 years now) Its a gamble that can work out and save you a ton of money, but it can also cost you if the pump is bad. The two guys I swapped used pumps for were strapped for cash and I knew where the used pumps came from.
