so i just got my truck back together after p pumping and installing a new hamilton cam, as per hamiltons break in instructions i understand i am to make sure i have oil pressure before i start the motor up.. so i have my valve cover off and im cranking for about 10 to 15 seconds at a time and cant seem to get any oil to the head, tried taking off the line to the turbo, nothing there either, even went as far as taking off the oil filter and cranking, still cant get any oil pressure...

is the motor just not turning over fast or long enough for oil to make it anywhere or do i have bigger problems? i never had the pan or oil pump off... im tempted to just pour some oil down alongside the pushrods and starting the motor to see if i can get some oil moving that way but im afraid im going to wreck my new cam if i dont follow the propper break in procedure... please help!

I can run my motor with no covers, and I don't have oil coming up. But when I take them off normally, there's oil all over them. I don't know where it comes from.

I just soaked the cam in assembly lube, and rubbed oil on it before I sealed her back up.

so i should just crank for 15 seconds then let the starter cool down for 10, about 4 or 5 times then just fire it up and see what happens? i would think i would have had oil pressure to the turbo feed or atleast the oil filter tho.... just thinking maybe it takes a few seconds running before the oil makes it there

Yeah my truck has to run for a good 5 seconds before the dash oil gauge registers. You could always pour it down the pushrod holes.

Did you change your oil at the same time you installed the cam?
Is this a first startup on a new engine?

If either of those is a yes then the oil pump might not be primed of the oil filter might not be full. We usually put some lubriplate in the oil pump to help it prime and fill the oil filter to the top with oil. If you have a lot of miles the oil pump might have some excessive clearance.

If no on both of the first two questions, then start it up, just do not rev it until after oil gets to the top of the engine.

i did change the oil but i filled up the new filter... got it goin now... i poured lots of oil down the push rods and then fired it up.. had oil pressure instantly! then i shut it down, put my valve cover on and then started it back up and reved to 2 grand for about 5 mins.. now im just waiting for it to cool off and i will reset my valve clearances... correct?
