Carter Fuel pumps

the lift pump on my dads 99 has been getting weak (truck has a low fuel pressure dummy light). so we tracked down a carter pump that is supposed to make ~ 18 psi, and flow 100 gph. drove 1 1/2 hours to summit an picked one up. we put the pump on the truck an the light would come on at idle. it is mounted on the inside of the frame right below the drivers seat, and we bypassed the factory pump. so then i bought a gauge to put on it and this pump would not make more than 10 psi, we even took off the retutn line and plugged it to make sure we didnt have a leak or were sucking air.
i called summit and they said just bring it back and we will replace it, so unhappily i drove there again and swapped it out.
well we still cannot get it to make more than 10 psi and i already have 6 hours worth of driving in this thing so i am not going to go take it back just to have the same thing happen again.
my question is has anyone else ever had this issue?
the people at summit said they just put the wrong pump in the box. but twice?
 
Sure every VP owner has had this issue, that's why they ditched the Carter! FASS, Air Dog, Holley black's, you have lots of options. You probably could have paid for one by now with all that driving, use the search tool and start reading.
 
i figured that particular would be a good alternative to a holley. this wasnt a stock replacement pump, and it didnt perform as advertised. hes not gonna spend that much on a fass or airdog, this is just a work truck that he wants to be reliable and cheap..
 
i would go with a fass hpfp. they also come with a lifetime warranty. the fass direct replacement pumps dont seem to be much better pressure wise than the stock pumps. cheap and reliable dont really go hand in hand.

I get 11.58 volts at the pump with the engine idling & 15 psi idle.

I agree. I spent about 1k on fuel pumps total. 3 holleys and one fass. Save time and headache get a good pump and be happy. *bdh* is all that happens when you try and be cheap
 
I have a DDRP and it is ok but if you are going to go that route put in a draw straw and new line from the tank to the vp and get rid of the factory banjo fittings.

thats the exact same pump i was supposed to have had. i wonder if somone just had a bad day and put the wrong pump in this box. if so they could be like this everywhere, and the only way anyone would ever know was to put it in and find out its wrong. i dont wanna go through all this driving and shipping crap again.
 
ya they do.. i should have said that was the part number i gave them when i went, and it was the same number on the box (checked before i left summit).
 
i did that as well and remember it being correct on the 2nd one. not so sure on the first one cuz i didnt expect this all to happen
 
No wonder folks don't like them.
I'll be getting another one pretty soon, my WOT pressure is down to 8psi with the bigger injector nozzles.
I guess I'll make a bucket-n-hose test rig so I don't have to mess with the truck until I know I have a working pump.

Another problem is some of the ECM's don't supply enough voltage to power those pumps. They power a relay fine though, which the more expensive pumps use.
 
how are u going to test psi though? it seems to push plenty of fuel, just wont make the psi..

we checked voltage at the pump and it was 13.4 volts, which should be more than plenty..

called dad last nite and he said he checked the part number on both pumps and they were both 4601HP. so im guessing we just got a couple bad ones...?
 
Submerge the line on the suction port in fuel, put a line, bleeder & gauge on the discharge port, fire up & prime the pump then open the bleeder to a dribble and read the gauge.

How long did ya'll run the engine with the new pumps?
I primed mine with the Free 25 Second Lift Pump Run (key starter bump) 4 times before starting the engine.
What was the range of the gauge?
Mine is US Gage 0-30psi +or- .5psi on a guage calibration (Drutt) for middle scale where the gauge will be fairly precise.

carter probably changed the design of the pump so now it wont work with diesel.
