Few new discoveries lately...

- Its a bone stock 24v with stacks, yet it smokes more than usual...
- I overlooked the air filter when buying the truck, it was a farm truck and i have a feeling not just the air filter needs changed.
- also checked the turbo shaft, it has a small amount of play in it... that could lead to the excessive smoking by it not spooling up quick enough?

Heres my old air filter

Thats not just dirt, its oil too, thats what made us check the turbo... it too had some excess oil around the outlet.

and heres my new one (yeah, the truck needs a good wash)

I like the "Big. Honkin. Air. Filter."
Im sure this will help in fuel saving and turbo sound too probably... Swamps gave me a rough estimate on rebuilding the stock turbo.... i could buy a better one for cheaper lol.. :rockwoot:

turbo shaft can move .013" side to side and .004" in and out. at least the hx35.
yet the seals could be bad easily.

ill have to check the play... its not much so i could see it still being within specs. but if it is then there is another question coming, what other reason would it smoke so nicely?

it spools like normal... but it still smokes. it used to have the fuel turned up on it with a programmer but i made him turn it down when he sold it to me.... maybe he didnt turn it down ALL the way?

Cool story bro.

Really? A thread about your switch to a BHAF and a worn out stock turbo? Am I still on CompD?

Did you not get the programmer? You actually pressurized things and checked for boost leaks?

is this how you think its not a boost leak?

and if you didnt get the programmer from the seller, then thats your own stupidity.

Did you figure it out yet?

I would pull the injectors and have them tested. Did mine 6 months ago, smoking some. Found they were carboned up and 1000psi low on the pop-off pressure.

Yeah i figured it out, the shaft play gauges a little too much. I had only taken for one trip after i got the new air filter on, now it doesnt smoke to much so maybe it was just me.
Also, When i bought the truck, the guy had to tuned by his buddy. I had him turn it back down to stock before i bought it because he wasnt going to give me something that was not his.:stab:

Cummins Specs for the HX35 is:

Axial Clearance is .0015-.0035"

Radial Clearance is .006-.025"

This info came from a Cummins ISB Manual.
