Clearcoating stainless?

Howdy folks,

I'm getting ready to do some running lights on my truck and to mount them on the sides I'm going to make a stainless strip that attcahes to the bottom of the cab to mount the lights on, make it look a little nicer. When you clear coat polished stainless, does it stay as shiny as before the clear coating? And will it keep me from having to polish it all the time?

IIRC, the clear coat does cause the stainless to be less shiny. I intend to see exactly what happens when we clear powder coat the polished aluminum valve covers. If it screws it up, then I'll just use the reflective chrome powder coat color on it.

There is such a thing? I've read around and found stuff that was suppose to approximate chrome but nothing really came close.
