Clipping the water pump fins so I dont blow freeze plugs???????
Good idea bad idea????????

Been done before with positive results, IMHO by doing this can lead to premature bearing wear in the pump, I went with an electric set-up I put together instead....

Could someone explain how to clip the vanes? Take out every other one? Clip .100" off the outside diameter? Grind .020 off the edge that faces the block?

Just thinking about this from a mechanical standpoint, it seems rather foolish to make a water pump less efficient to stop frost plugs from exiting their intended resting place. I wouldn't want to sacrifice cooling ability to remedy the problem when there are other methods to keep the plugs in place.

that's probably because you have a D-max... our cooling systems are very effective. just cruising around, the Cummins will cool fine w/ only two fins on the pump. then, while pulling, you're turning it twice as fast as it was designed to, and it'll cool fine then as well.

wouldn't recomend towing heavy though

Wouldn't it be unbalanced with only 2 fins since there's only 5 fins in the first place?

I am going to cut 1 fin off with a dremel, and for a little cooling reasurance I am going to run WATER WETTER with my anti-freeze :chug:.
P.S. Nice set up JOE!

we have a electric h2o pump coming out in about 2/3 wks. it will bolt in the factory location. will put a end to the freeze plug issue. should sell for about $250.00

What I drive has nothing to do with my thought pattern about this subject. It just seems asinine to modify a water pump to make it less efficient. Since you don't have 5 or 6 temperature gauges with probes all over the block/head you can't say you aren't creating a hot spot with a less efficient water pump. The factory gauge will never pick that up.

I just figured you were concerned about cooling since you have a D-max and they're fairly notorious for getting hot...

this has been done a lot with no ill effects. YMMV

i had 2 fins clipped on mine and never had any overheating problems it never really changed much from stock. the cummins runs pretty cool as it is so it doesn't effect it much when you clip the fins, but when you start turning 5000rpm it does get hot but since the fins are clipped it supplies enough flow to keep it cool and doesn't over pressurize the system and blow the freeze plugs out. the reason i clipped mine wasn't because of the freeze plugs, it was because i was spinning it so fast that it was blowing anti-freeze out of the over flow bottle at 5500-6000rpm
