My brother blew 4th gear out of his NV5600 & got a rebuilt unit installed. The shop who rebuilt it can rebuild his old NV5600 & they are gonna work me a deal. I'll be converting from NV4500 to the NV5600. I am in the middle of doing body work/paint on my truck & don't have time to search the forums. Can you guys give me some answers to these questions?

1. Will my 241DLD transfer case bolt up to the NV5600?

2. Will I need to buy a NV5600 tranny mount or just modify my NV4500 mount to bolt in the NV5600?

3. What needs to be done as far as making the speedo work?

4. What is involved in the driveshafts?

Thanks in advance. Also, if you have the parts needed, let me know if we can work a deal.

T case mount is the same I believe (back of tranny), but I'm not certain about input shafts to the t case. Driveshafts will have to be altered, the 5600 is a good bit longer. Buy the correct mount, the crossmember is the same on all the trucks, just the mount from the tranny to said crossmember is different.

This is all to the best of my knowledge, if I'm wrong somewhere someone please post up!

6-speed swap

Article from dodgeram.org on swapping one into a 98. Its dosn't cover everything though.

Basically the 6 speed is 5.5 In longer. So you'll need to change the driveshafts and the TC shift linkage by that much. Also unless you've got an upgraded 1 -3/8 input shaft on you 5 -speed you'll need a new clutch and flywheel.

I think im going to have to agree with Forrest here. It cost $1350 to rebuild a 5 speed plus $500 for the big input shaft and the 6 speed is $3300. I think the 5 speed is a better box all the way around. The 6 speeds 3-4-5 gear ranges are a nice split but the cummins has plenty of torque so i dont think the extra cost or labor to swap is justified. My 2 cents. Tim

i almost sure the out put is the same size on both trans. i will find out this weekend for sure. the 6 spd is way better for towing expecialy if you tow heavy and have the airplane gears that most of these trucks have but it is a real pain in the a!! to take in and out.

I already have the 1 3/8 input. Thanks for the info & link.
unless you've constantly got a heavy gooseneck in tow, I wouldn't waste my time w/ the 5600 swap
My brother put 125k miles on his truck, constantly towing 16k+ with his foot buried in the throttle & the tranny held up great. They just seem like they are bulletproof compared to my nv4500.

I understand where you are coming from. I tow heavy & many times wished I had the extra gear. The guy who rebuilt my brothers tranny seems to really know his stuff. His tranny never shifted as good as it does now. It came with a warranty & the guy is well aware of my brothers hp & driving habits. He sold my brother the nv5600 for $1800 installed. I can probably get one cheaper yet being a repeat customer. My 5 speed has been rebuilt 3 times & I figured the nv5600 would be a good upgrade.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I'm with the "if you tow heavy" crowd,I love my 5600,but I do half of my driving with a load on,a 5 speed is a lot cheaper,if you are going to break stuff all the time just keep a 5

Just wondering here, but $1800 installed? That is cheap because 400 to 500 of that is labor for the install. That leaves 1300 for a rebuild. That must only be a new bearing and synchro kit. I have priced them at three different shops and they were all 3000+ dollars but that was a complete rebuild including new mainshaft, input, gears and synchro hubs. I usually deal with all-standard trans in Indianapolis IN. They have been really good to deal with and they know that we sled pull and abuse them and they still give me a 1 year warranty.

when I destroyed my 4500 the dealer quoted me like $2500 to do a swap from 4500 to 5600. I stayed with the 4500 since I was under warranty and my friend is a tech there. The swap would of cost me about $1000 less if I had to pay for the 2 different trannys myself.
