Replaced the water pump on my 91 12v a few weeks ago with Cummins 5473238 from Geno's. Nearly $300 after taxes & shipping, but I like supporting them.

Decided to order a spare Cummins water pump PN: 5473238 to keep on the shelf. Searched ebay and found loads of Cummins "brand" pumps, same part number, under $100.

Is there that much mark up on these pumps? I'm skeptical to buy a true Cummins "brand" item such as a water pump from ebay, but just might have to at that price.

Anyone else buying these off ebay? Sure seems tempting.

I buy lots of electronic items from ebay for work. Weekly purchases.

eBay and Amazon are scam city for Cummins parts. They got the box and labels perfected. I buy from certified Cummins parts dealers if I want a true oem part.

No, what you paid Geno's is about right. Our cost on that WP, and we get DEEP discounts on Cummins, is $215.00.

The question to me isn't whether the known imposter parts are substandard to the OEM castings, seals, and impeller. That's a given. The questions is, do you trust them. Sure you can buy three of them for the same price, even if one or two fails, you can swap them on the side of the road by flippin' off the belt and removing two bolts. But do you really want to do that? You know as well as I do the SOB won't fail when it's 75F outside, 1 mile from your house, and you have all day with nothing to do. It's gonna fail when it's 105F outside, on the interstate, 175 miles from home, towing a trailer hauling a dinosaur to an orphanage! Just ask @TravisG . It happened to him.

Do I buy a lot of cheap, Chinesium, knock-off, complete-**** parts from Amazon...sure. All the time....but not critical engine parts for the Dodge.

Now, you can also decide whether an exploded impeller can damage your engine. Chances are, it won't, but......do you want to risk a 10K engine to save a hundred or two? I know how tempting it is, trust me.

Scott, thanks for verifying. Helps me confirm I'm not going crazy. My fathers 04 will need a water pump soon, and the gates pumps seem to last about 30,000 miles at best. Where as Cummins has made 80,000 miles in the past.

Fellas, thanks. I knew about the fuel and oil filter scams. Didn't know scammers were after water pumps also.

Carry on.

There's counterfeits of almost everything now. They're even making counterfeit cheap Squier guitars you can buy new at a store for $150-$200. Used to, it was just $2K-$4K Fender Custom Shop you needed to worry about.

I suppose the label on the box caught my attention. The box and label look exactly the same as the $300 unit from Geno's. Glad I know.

We also purchase lots of Yaskawa electrical drive components from ebay. They all arrive in Yaskawa boxes, with OEM stickers. The products work and they all look the same, no matter which seller we purchase from. All of them from china.

Bought some power supplies for a new naval ship equipment design. I unboxed them and they said right on them "Made in China." Into the trash can they went and I had to find some that were made in Taiwan since China is on the DOD naughty list.
