Who has broken D70's dragracing and what numbers were you pushing at the time?

I'm trying to decide if I want to buy lockers for my D70 or look for something bigger.

I'd also like to hear if any 4x4 guys have broken them?

I have broken 2 Dana 70's daily driving my truck with a couple sled pulls and some drag racing. No higher than 350hp. They both just started making noise and when i pulled them apart the pinion was ruined on both of them with a bunch of stress cracks.

I dont have much faith in them myself, but im pretty sure the Smith's truck and several other drag racers are running a Dana 80.

They can be found, just keep your eyes open.

I didn't read your threads about having some issues. Didn't you have some odd things going on with them? 350hp seems like an easy task for one of these rears even if equiped with dana 60 sized pinion.

I never had a problem with either of the Dana 70's i had until they just broke all together. My dana 80 had a spun pinion bearing when i bought it and i had problems with that recently, but I think i have it fixed. At leat for a while.

I thought they should hold what i had no problem, but the 2 i got wouldnt. :bang

Still have the housings, and limited slip units in the shed. maybe a good rebuilt one would have been fine? Both mine had around 200k miles on them.

Yeah man, hard to say. Mine is holding up great so far albeit a leaky pinion seal (knock on wood). Going to put her to the test sunday!!!:rockwoot:

My brother scattered the guts and sheared an axle shaft clean off his D70, at around 103k. That axle had never sled pulled and only made 2 drag strip passes, 12.8 @ 105. And the truck was bone stock until 95k.

i broke a spider gear in mine running the times in my sig. went to a 80. then i found out that the CSI boys are still running a 70 and going mid 9's at 145mph. kinda wish i woulda stayed with the 70 now. i am strickly street/drag tho.

So it sounds like, if I was to stick with the D70, I would need to modify it some to make it hold. I imagine that somebody makes strong parts for them? Or is the best bet to have the pinion, axles, ring and pinion treated somehow?

Also, I imagine that the 3.07 rear end makes things more likely to break that a 3.5 or 4.1 rear end, right?

If you're drag racing only I wouldn't worry about doing anything to your d70. I'm running low 12s on mine and many are going much faster. If you tractor pull though that's a different story from what i've been told.

Or, if you have a manual transmission and more than 350 hp you will break it racing IMO.

when i talked to ether man (jimmy dale smith) when he came down best i can remember they are still running the 70 w/spool in the 4x4 drag truck. but they (d70) don't like the sled.

My Dana 70 is the reason I worry about taking the truck down the track. It also worries me a bit when I tow heavy.

I broke a d80 at the dragstrip in my other truck! welded the limited slip unit and broke both side gears! at right around 500hp 6-speed truck
