So, My buddy Kevin and I slapped new rotors and pads on Saturday. they have been doing fine until a few blocks from work this morning.... they were requiring more pedal input than before and when I pulled up at the office, they smelled like ass and were hot as hell..... The rotors look fine. Any ideas?

Caliper stuck, by chance?

I tell you what, Tim..On sunday, I took my suction gun and removed the old fluid from the reservoir of my master cylinder. Then, after filling it with new fluid, I bled the brakes to get the remaining old fluid out of the system. It made a huge difference in pedal feel.

Was everything cleaned before you assembled it? it could have been the oil that comes on the rotors from the store.

Doesn't feel like a caliper is stuck Scott... The truck aint pulling... it almost feels like the bad brake fairy glazed the damn pads rendering them useless...

Cleaned the piss out of them... bout a half can of brake cleaner.

Did you clean up the calipers? sometimes you get trash on the pins that they ride on they bind. Sounds like one might be dragging. Another thing is sometimes you push trash that sits in the lines back up into the proportioning valve and it can cause them to stick.

Is it both sides or just the one?

Bad brake fairy..:hehe: :hehe:

Well, hot means the pads were obviously making contact. I would think that if you got them that hot, any oil or grease on the pads would be long gone by now. That, and you say they were working fine. Had there been oil or grease involved, the issue would have been instant when you put the truck back together.

So, that leads to this. Hot = pads making contact. So, you either have 2 calipers that aren't retracting, or brake hoses that are collapsed internally that aren't allowing fluid to return to the cylinder thus keeping pressure on the piston.

I suppose that the heat would also be the reason why more pedal input is required to stop the damned thing as well huh? God... I hate to hear what calipers may cost...

They are not that bad ... I paid like $27.00 ea for them lifetime warranty. I take them back every other pad change.

Calipers are cheap compared to the rear end of a Caddy two blocks from your office LOL

Replace the fluid, soft lines and calipers this weekend, you will be amazed at how much better it acts.

My money would be on the caliper binding on the pins. High temp grease on those is a must do. The bad pedal feel could be from the heat of a dragging pad causing the moisture in the fluid to boil off causing the lack of braking force. FWIW I had a caliper stick on a truck and it never pulled, but it ruined the wheel bearings and all it got so hot in less than 50 miles. After moisture in fluid destroyed a 2k antilock pump I change mine with every pad change.

Sounds like the caliper is bad, trust me I just went through replacing mine this weekend. I had the exact same problems as you are descibing. Calipers are about $50 a piece depending on where you get them.

Assuming these are the rears, I would say it is the calipers. My truck did the same thing on both sides. I was told that it was either the rubber hoses or the calipers, when i called Dodge to price the hoses( cuz all aftermarket have been discontinued) they told me $377 for both rubber hose assemblys! WHAT are they made of gold that was mined from the moon! Anyhow I tore it all apart and the hoses seem to be OK, but the calipers are froze solid.$.02

It is actually thr front brakes. We are gonna slap some calipers on this week.

X2 , My brakes sucked bad and I had the ABS & brake light on all the time. So Sat. I replaced the master cylinder and OMG you should have seen the goop that came out of the resevoir. So I put it on, bled 4 points and the lights went out and stops alot better now.
