From the NADM Rules:

Harmonic Balancer: All engines turning 4500 RPM and higher must be equipped with a harmonic balancer or damper meeting SFI Spec 18.1. A shield across the frame under the front of the motor shielding the damper and engine fan area is required.

Am I reading this right that the shield only needs to be on the bottom side, like some heavy plate bolted to the frame to stop the damper from coming out of the bottom of the engine bay? I am still running a fan belt so I can't shield it 360* but don't want to spend a day trying to build something crazy when I only need to shield the bottom side.

Shield the bottom side.

As long as you have steel inner fender wells and a hood, you are good to cover frame to frame on the bottom.

Thanks Gene, when I first read it I was thinking it needed to be a full shield like some of the mod trucks have, but this is a little easier to accomplish.

hey Gene, this is not needed if your balancer meets spec 18.1 in the ss class,or has this been changed recently?

I asked that same question and was told this is required even with SFI certified dampers. If you are cranking the motor hard enough to need and SFI damper then it should have a shield in case it were to come off the crank somehow.

Now that I read it only has to be shielded on the bottom its not so hard to get the shield made up.

I'll proabably put one on,but the rules say 2.6 2.8 need one and ss only if you run a tone ring without a balancer wtb???

The wording will be cleared up, but yes, you should have a shield even if its an SFI damper. Why? The bolts or the end of the crank could break off.
I have not personally seen or heard this happening with our Diesels, but it has happened in other classes.
