Will a Dana 80 from a 97 2500 4x4 SRW fit under a 98 2500, SRW without any mods? I have a dana 70 I'm getting ready to get rid of. Is it a easy swap or will I have to do a lot of rework? What HP/Torque are the 80's 35 spline axles usually good for or who has the best deal on some upgrade axles?

Also, does anyone know how much a full 80 axle with hubs weighs?

Thanks.

Paul

it should fit. not sure what the axles are rated for but the spider gears will break long before the axles. if you going to pull get a detriot locker or true trac limited slip. i have broken the spiders in mine just towing a trailer. not sure what they weigh.

they weigh ALOT have been told between 400 and 500lbs not sure if it is true.
they swap right out but you will need knew u bolts since the 80 is 4" tube and your 70 is 3.5". the only other difference is if you had disc or drum brakes and what you bought is different.

are the posi's the same for an 70 and 80? i know the gears are not but maybe the posi?

Thanks for answers. Good to know about the tube diameter.

Since posting I found a Dana sight that listed the 80 axle at 370 lbs without brake assemblies. With them it's easily between 400 - 500 lbs.

Both are drum brakes. The one I'm most interested in has a Detroit locker already in it. But it's about 850 miles away. Still, shipping would be cheaper that a new locker and labor to install.

thanks again.

I used my same u-bolts, but had to get new saddles for under the axle and the plates on top of the springs to accommodate the 4 inch tube. The 80 is also about 1'' longer so make sure to check your drive shaft length.

I had to buy new ubolts for my swap, I think it depends on year on the length of the ubolts. Haisleys has some nice 5/8" u bolts.

I bought new u bolts at the local spring shop, cost like 15 bucks each. I was going to get some 5/8, but they did not have the right length, so i got 3/4 u bolts. Nothing like a overkill!! but at least they should not break.

Had to do new U bolts and Shorten the drive shaft about 1 3/4 and some new shocks cause the 80 had different shock mount position so I had to get longer ones.
