Ok so I found a dana 80 out of a srw 99. I have a 01 with a dana 70 that i am wanting to change out to the 80 so that it will stop breaking every time i sled pull. So Im just wondering if everything will bolt right up like it should or if there are going to be things that will have to be altered. I do know this axle has drum brakes and was wonder if i could put the disk brakes off of my dana 70 and switch them right over to the 80? I am also wondering about the size of the yoke where the driveshaft hooks to and wondering if my driveshaft will hook right up to the new dana 80? Im just looking to hear from people with experience with this conversion and would like to know what im getting into before I buy the axle. thanks :thankyou2:

What trans does your truck have and what trans did the donor truck have?
Drive shaft needs to be shortened 1". And get the D80 bottom axle pads since the 80 have bigger axle tubes than the 70.

Mine is a automatic and the donor truck was a manual. and with the axle im getting the old driveshaft, and axle pads. so im thinking i should have everything but not sure. anymore feedback is greatly apreciated as i only have until tomorrow morning to figure out if i can get it or not because if not it will most likely be sold to someone else tomorrow afternoon. thanks and keep em coming.

Your truck with the Automatic has a 241 dld transfer case. The manual truck should have a 241 dhd. Output shaft is bigger on the dhd. So the drive shaft from the manual truck with the d80 will not plug into your transfer case. If you use your shaft it will probably have to be shortened, although i have heard of a few cases where the worked. IMO buy it and make it work if you are gonna pull. In can be done fairly easy.

If your breakn d-70's then a d-80 conversion is...well bout the only option you have. So if ya can get an 80 then ya better get it cause they are kinda hard to find. And for puttn it in, not bad just the stuff that has been said above.

what about when it comes to the brakes the d80 has drum breaks and my d70 has disk brakes. will my rotors and everything off of my d70 switch over to the d80? thanks

This is not true at all. It all depends on the options the truck was ordered with. I have a 99 2500 with an auto and a DHD transfer case. And I have seen personally 5spd trucks with the DLD case.

I never converted brakes from drum to disc. grncummins. go out to your truck crawl under it and look on the round tag on the back side of your transfer case, See if it says 241dld or dhd. I have seen a few autos with the dhd, some of which have been changed out sometime in the past, but for a rule of thumb it should be a dld. Let us know what the tag says.

the transfer case is a 241 DLD.

As it should be. You will have to use your shaft but it will probably have to be shortened about an inch. Look at the t-case on the truck you are getting the d80 from and see if it is a 241dhd.( Should Be ) if so get the shaft and put it up because you will need it if you are gonna pull. The next weekest link is your dld output shaft. and you will be lookin for a dhd, then you will need that shaft with a bigger slip yoke. I wish i could help ya with the brakes but I`m lost. If the d80 is worth the money don`t let it get away.

have to get the drive shaft shorten one inch to get it to fit as for the breaks you might have to change the hubs to be able to make it disk brakes but i am not sure on that

ok thank you grainfarmer and everyone else I will proly gonna pick it up tomorrow.:thankyou2:

Grainfarmer, there is no "as it should be" when it comes to what transfer case our trucks have. It all depends on the options ordered with the truck. Out of all the 5spd trucks I have ever been under NONE of them have had the DHD.
This is mainly because the NV4500 has the PTO option, the automatics needed the DHD in order to have a PTO.

So with that being said, you find more DHD's in auto's than you will in standard trucks.

i have one with a 5speed with a dhd, and my 94 that i used to own had one as well. how many of those 5 speeds that you have been under were 2wd?:hehe: just kiddin:hehe::hehe:

I shortened my drive shaft 1.5", hopefully didn't go too far... The parking brake is not hooked up on mine yet, because I went from disc to drum brakes. No the disc brakes won't work. Oh and I had to wire in the speed sensor from the 80 I got out of a '96, it was different than my 2001.

Other than that it all bolted up... Oh but my plates I built for my traction bars, the holes are wrong. Cuz the axle tubes are larger, so my plates won't go back on. I gotta redrill the holes.

I put an 80 in mine a while back.

I had to run the Dana 80 axle plates on it, which you will need for sure. It had the same drums as my 70 had, so that wasnt a problem, and I actually didnt shorten my driveshaft.

My driveshaft has about 3/4-1" of in and out movement available. Just enough to get it in the yoke on the rear axle and then slid it back and bolt it in. I really would like to shorten it some, but i run traction bars, and have pulled and towed with it with no problems so far. The yoke on the 70 and 80 should accept the same U-Joint so you should be good there.

You definately need an 80 if you pull any though.

Eric
