I'm in need of a few of these:

This appears to be the only place I've found that sells replacement axle shaft gaskets for the dana axles in our trucks... there's got to be another p/n that I can search for on other stores' websites....?

(is it a faux-pas to forego the gasket and slap some RTV in its place?)

i went ahead and did some hi-temp RTV...and ordered a handful of the ones I linked above.

Go to napa, buy some oil-resistant gasket material, make your own.

Mopar has an "Axle RTV" that I use on diff covers and axle shafts.

I think any RTV will work fine though.

Pretty much every FF axle I have seen had silicone hanging out of it. It seems like most people reuse the paper gasket till it tears then just goop it up. Just for fun, my Spicer S-111 axle has an Oring seal. One time deal as it gets distorted. Also since it rides to the inside of the bolt cirle any oil that gets on the flange will end up on the rim making you think its leaking. Dont ask how I know.
