deck surface prep

wondering if it is ok to use a 3m roloc pad on the block deck surface to get it clean, have a lot of rust on the pass side of the block- where the head dosn't cover the gasket.

You should use a rotary wire wheel.
You would not think it, but those pads will remove metal. When you see sparks fly that is metal being removed. They will make low points around bolt holes. If you use them be careful. You just want to remove the rust scale and build up. It does not have to be shiny.

I've used green roloc pads on a few builds. Never had a problem or a measurable effect on deck flatness.

Green for aluminum blocks and heads, brown for the cast ones.

That's what the dealer uses.

I use an abrasive rubber finger wheel.
