If I put all the shims on the inside of the bearings close to the locker like it was on the limited slip carrier. To get the backlash correct I could just change the outside shims next to the race. is this correct or am I just wishfull thinking? Just trying to make it easier on me and didn't want to buy setup bearings. This is my first time doing this. I have help from a good buddy that is a Master Mechanic.
Thanks
Ryan

I`m afraid you are just wishful thinkin. When I busted my L/S. I installed a detroit locker for a while untill I could get a new spool. The shims that was on the L/S was all the shims that I needed but most were moved to one side. You may have to wrestle it in and out several times to get your backlash right. Make sure that where your bearings ride is smooth and the bearings will slide on and off easily. Just curious to what your purpose for the truck is ? Puller ? Driver ?

Use your old bearings as set up bearings. Go buy a few of those sandpaper flap wheels that go in a drill and remove enough material so they slide on by hand.

You can adjust your outer shims if you know where to get them from. I made a 4.10 diff case work with a 3.55 axle on my dana 80. Took a long time to figure that one out.

Appreciate the info. The truck is mainly a puller but I like to drive it a little bit on weekends. I didn't the right bearing puller so i had to cut the bearings in half. one i had pulled the cage off the bearing. I still might can use it as a setup bearing.
