Trucks on the Mountain at Truck Fest

Blue skies and upper 90-degree weather challenged the racers at the 2007 ATS Trucks on the Mountain at Bandimere Speedway in Denver Colorado. With a large field of racers, winning this race was no easy task.

DHRA had 79 racers enter the Flowmaster ET class. Of those 68 made it to eliminations for some great bracket racing. When the smoke cleared heading into the semi-finals, Kurt Steiner’s 1992 Dodge would face Dave McManis’ 2007 Dodge. The other pair was Troy Grant’s 2000 F350 facing Bill Hahn’s 2000 Chevy 2500.

Steiner would take the win over McManis in a close race with McManis breaking out with a 15.48 on a 15.50 dial. In the next pairing, Troy Grant put together a .023 reaction time, which proved the difference against Hahn. Grant runs a 20.27 on a 20.13 dial to Hahn’s 13.49 on a 13.47 dial.

The Flowmaster ET final would then have Troy Grant face Kurt Steiner, both from Colorado. Both racers drilled the tree with .0xx reaction times but Grant runs a 20.42 coasting on a 20.04 dial to Steiner’s 14.69 on a 14.10 dial.

The Valvoline Premium Blue Quick Diesel class had a total of 14 entries and the 12.0 Index would prove tough to reach. The semi-final rounds would have Brett Williams’ Dodge facing Mike Dillehay’s Ford and Shawn Ellerton getting a single run to advance to the finals. Williams would take advantage of the transmission problems of Dillehay and runs a winning 13.09 to Dillehay’s 15.92.

The final round between Williams and Ellerton would be all Williams. Both drivers were nearly equal off the starting line, but problems for Ellerton and his resulting 18.51 run would not be enough to equal William’s 12.66.

The AirWerks Pro Street class had 5 entries. Thin air and hot temps proved to win out over a class of determined racers to perform in front of the Bandimere crowd. After qualifying rounds, only 2 trucks survived for a one round elimination for all of the money. Chris Calkins would face Pat McSwain to see who could get the most out of their truck for the win. Both trucks had been close most of the day, with McSwain the #1 qualifier and Calkins #2 going into the final. Calkins knowing he had to get everything possible from the tree went red with a -.001 reaction time giving the win to McSwain. McSwain ran a best of the day 11.008 @ 126.01 mph to the losing 11.520 @ 127.50 of Chris Calkins.

DHRA was also pleased to have 5 Top and Pro Diesel vehicles take part in the event. The racers agreed to combine classes, and after qualifying, the only carnage was that of the Scheid dragster which blew a turbo. Charlie Stewart would lower his DHRA record to a 8.31 and MPH record at 164.23 on his way to a victory over Mike Williams with his beautiful 1999 Duramax powered Chevy 1500 which ran a 11.45 @ 136. John Robinson in the Texas Diesel Power would face Dustin Bentz in the Valvoline/ATS Rocky Mountain Cummins dragster. Robinson would make his best pass ever to take the win with a 9.40 @ 142 over the 10.14 @ 153 of Bentz. Unfortunately, Mother Nature decided to cool things off a little with a rainstorm that canceled the finals.

The pulls were a lot of fun for the first time ever at Bandimere. It seems not only did the competitors enjoy the competition, but so did Bandimere. ATS should be thanked by everyone for adding this feature to an already packed event.

DHRA would like to thank Bandimere Speedway, ATS, Rocky Mountain Cummins, all of our sponsors and most of all everyone that came out to support the event. This was our first year being a part of this very special event, and one we felt very honored to be a part of.

DHRA’s next event is a sled pull in Owensville MO on July 28th. DHRA’s next drag race will be August 26th at Action Dragway in Terre Haute, Indiana. We look forward to seeing you there.

Somebody should have told Ingram he was at altitude. Talk about a whoopin'
