For a 98 12v. I know I have D60 front, and D70 rear. Looking up rebuild kits, I find -HD, and -U. I know I don't have HD, but what did the -U come in? If I had it, would it be listed on the sticker?

The D70U came in Ram 2500s and 3500s from '94-'02. The only other possibility would be the D80, which was available during the same time period.

Heres a link from Randy's Ring & Pinion for Ram 2500 rears: http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffList.aspx?SearchMode=Make&MakeID=1&Make=Dodge&ModelID=483&Model=Ram+2500+3%2f4+Ton&Side=Rear&DriveType=4WD

Lots of good info on that site, and great people to deal with too. As for the sticker, I assume the axle type would be on there, but I really cant say for sure.

Hope that helps :Cheer:

Wow, randy's site has updated. It used to be kinda difficult to find the good info like that.

So I guess I do have the D70U then. Go figure.

Yeah, they've stepped their site up a lot since back in the day. Ive used them pretty much exclusively for my axle builds so far. Really good guy to do business with :rockwoot:

Does your axle still have the tag attached to the diff cover bolts? If so when you call they will take that number and get you the right parts.

I forgot about that tag. I never noticed it, but I've never looked for it either. I'll have to go out and check, if I can remember.

The BOM should also be stamped into the axle tube. The D70U are usually identifiable by the smooth underside. The wheelers used to like these, nothing to hook on the rocks.

I believe they do, but I can't/won't say for sure. I do know that the carriers are different between the D70, D70U and D70HD.

Just shooting off the top of my head but IIRC the U had a smaller pinion and bearings compared to the d70 and 70hd

Damn it dave, now you got me scared. And I forgot to go check againmbecause I spent all day on the damn cam.

Ok, just looked, the carrier has "70-2U" stamped into it on the back/bottom drivers side.

And from what I could find on Randy's, 2nd gens 3/4 tons only came with D70-U 32 splines. I know there had to be more options than that.

For auto's they should all be the 32 spline D70U. Manuals should have the 35 spline D80, so yes there were more options.

I meant just for the D70, and that I thought there were more options like the HD. But it looks like they'll fit regardless, so this thread has served its purpose!

Thanks CompD!
