I've been looking for trucks for a while. I do want a 4x4 extended cab 2nd gen, but I will only use the 4wd maybe 5 times a year. Do you guys think the benefits of 4wd, considering how many times I will actually use it, to the gas mileage gains of a 2wd be worth it?

What do you guys think 4x4, or 2wd?

Is there an actual noticable gas mileage gain with the 2wd vs. the 4x4?

i dont use four wheel drive much in my truck but its nice to have i've never noticed any difference in insurance prices

it is an average of 30 to 50 bucks cheaper! ive been through a lot of insurance companies. its more money because they figure its higher risk having 4x4 because most places you need it are in hazardous places. even though its a safety feature kinda.

I've owned both 2wd and 4x4. I can tell you 2wd Cummins aren't any good when it comes to crappy driving conditions. I've got lucky threw some deep snow before, but they just seem to get stuck in everything. However for a daily driver they are great. I rebuilt the whole front end of my 2wd (upper & lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, idler, pitman, brakes, bearings, I didn't spare anything and it drove like a dream. There is such a big difference daily driving a Cummins w/ IFS versus a solid axle.

If you do a 2wd, get a another set of rims for the rear and slap on some really aggressive mudders and install a locker for the winter time.

go look at the truck im talking about. BadAssDiesel.com

i absolutely love my 2wd, and like said, it keeps me from getting into places that i might tear up my truck or get it stuck or break something... lol My only problem is traction at the drag strip, but ohh well i can deal with that...

four wheel drive is nice to have even if you dont use it much but the one time you do need to use it you'll be glad you have it.

I never use my 4x4 except in the winter. But like someone once told me

"Having 4x4 is like having a rubber... You'd rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it"

That's JMO.

well this is all true depending on location. the only weather i have to worry about is rain, and if you need 4x4 in rain then your just a bad driver. if you live somewhere that has snow and muddy conditions then i recommend 4wheel drive. but if its some you will never use then dont waste the money.

mostly depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you ever want to go to the dragstrip(or highway) and race or sled pull with it you would want 4x4, or if you drive off the highway much. It doesnt take much to get a 2 wheel drive stuck after it rains a few inchs, just my $.02

depends on where you live and what u do with it. I use my 4x4 more than most I plow snow in the winter and working part time on a farm when it rains just to get out of the side ditch or pulling anhydrous tanks. Ive drove 2wds and they drive 10 times better and get better mileage but like everyone said its nice to have like at TS this year people were stuck all over. but if everyone was in 2 wheelers it might not have gotten cancelled.

I'm going to get that Tattooed on my head! I love it. I've gotten stuck with my 2wd Cummins so much, everytime I was stuck, I just thought "If I only had 4x4, this thing would walk away from this"

TAKE NOTE: Front tires on DRY pavement.

yeah, 4wd is nice when you need it, my dad has a 97 2wd and that thing gets stuck in wet grass, sucks. also if you take care of your steering on your 4x4 it will drive great too. My 97k with 338,000 miles handles and drives better then my dads 2wd 97 with 90,000

Ya the solid axles can drive ok. Better than worn out IFS. But like I said in my early post about going over the whole front end. These trucks can handle like a sports cars when everything is working right.

I will NEVER own another 2wd vehicle as long as I can still buy vehicles.
4wd or AWD. Thats it!
2wd is for people that are to cheap to buy 4wd.

dont get me wrong ive put myself in situations were i needed the 4x4. but if its strictly going to be on the asphalt then why get it?
on a side note. i upgraded my steering to a 1997 steering and it made a huge difference on my truck! WAY better design!

IMO, if you live in a state that snows, they should make 2wd vehicles illegal in the winter. They are dangerous to the drivers and passengers and t the other people on the road.
