Driveline/Drivetrain problems

I had an obvious vibration/noise when driving down the road, so I checked the play in the front driveshaft and it was terrible. Got the front driveshaft pulled and it was all torn to he!!. I had the driveshaft rebuilt, and picked it up today. Did not have time to install it, which I plan on doing tomorrow evening.

Since I have been driving around without the front driveshaft, I started to notice a pretty loud knock coming from what sounds like the transfercase. The knock is totally random (or so it seems), and the truck is NOT in 4x4. I get the knock both accelerating and decelerating. When I get the knock, it almost feels like the truck hesitates from something binding up or slipping - more so while accelerating. When letting of the throttle and coasting, it will also knock.

I don't have a hex bolt to check the fluid in the transfercase, but that is where it sounds like it is coming from. It also sounds like it might be coming from the rear driveshaft or rear end maybe?? I will be checking the fluid tomorrow when I replace the front driveshaft. I will also be curious if the knock goes away after replacing the driveshaft, because it is something I have never felt before taking out the front driveshaft.

If anyone has any idea what may be going on, let me hear it.

Thanks,

Kyle

BTW, the reason I went straight to the front driveshaft is because I had a VERY BAD vibration when acclerating in 4x4 only - which was alot more violent than what I was experiencing in 2wd.

Sounds like the snap ring on the output shaft may be broken...pretty common. Pull the rear drive shaft and tail housing and there should be a snap ring behind the rear support bearing. If its broken it lets everything move forward and makes noises. I've never seen damage from it, just put on a new one or update collar and jam!

gotcha. thanks!

ill check it out tomorrow.

can u describe what kind of problems you had that led you to check out the t-case?

i Had a loud squeak / clunk ( for lack of better terms)....i though it was the trans, we pulled it and could not find anything wrong i spent hr's looking and finally pulled the t-case and that was the problem

I had a buddy that blew his t-case prior to him doing so it sounded like an aluminum can was rolling around in there!

hmm...thats not how i would describe what im hearing...i have more of a RANDOM loud bang that sounds like something hit the bottom of the cab near the transfercase...

If it's a quad cab short bed it does not, quad cab long beds do and any of the above that are 2wd (to the best of my knowledge).

okay well interesting night...

first, the fluid level in the transfer case was checked...wait...........there was no fluid level in my transfer case!! and only God knows for how long!!

on that note, any one selling a t-case that is in good condition? i would like to buy one, pull my t-case out and rebuilt it. buying one now would allow me to just swap the case and go on with my daily activities

thanks to LAmiller's sweet little pressure fitting, we also found the intercooler is busted!!

im glad all this stuff is breaking now and not right before the tracks start opening up

oops...sorry i forgot to add something

your probably wondering why I just dont fill it back up with fluid...well....

we tried...and it came right back out of the bottom through the seal just as fast as it was pouring in! :)

**UPDATE**

installed a new DLD last night.

the best part came after pulling the old DLD out for inspection. BOTH cases consist of major cracking, and a piece of the case about 1/8" in diameter busted out - explaining why the case wasnt holding fluid! originally thought it was just the seal
