i just bought a srw dana 80 with 5:13 gears out of a 95, i tried to put my inside dual on and it dosent fit over the drum. I had a drw 80 with disc brakes. Is there a way i can make this work that isnt too costly ( spacer) or am i going to have to run a single wheel?

You will need a spacer, you might need two, one between the rim and axle, and one between the rims, depending on what size tires you run.

To run the duals you have to gut the brakes and the backing plates I was going to run duals also but alot of rules state you need 4 wheel brakes so, as far as running some tye of disk brake set-up im not sure but I don't think it would work, and I wouldent want to run a spacer and put all that pressure on my studs.

ok guys thanks for the info ill have to think about this one and see what i wanna do

Several guys have ran the spacers with no issues. I think they make some spacers that center on the center of the axle, not the lugs. The lugs do hold it on though.

there is a way you can run breaks with out gutting everything and have your dualls on it, its a kinda a secret though im sorry man it does involve a spacer though but its inside the drum, and hit has to be Hub-centrick, i did it to my 97' and it worked amaizing, i just didnt have a parking break, and thats because i was to busy with other stuff to go and buy the new cable, nobody up here new how i did it they all thought i swapped out the single wheel axle for a dually axle, it was slick!!

Inside the drum

Inside the drum? The dually wheel won't clear the drum from what I have seen, but this is on an 01 drum, which is slightly smaller than the 99 and older drums. I am not understanding how a spacer inside the drum would change the drum not fitting inside the dually wheel. Now if you had 17" dually wheels it might be different.

Come on Marc (he is my brother) lets not keep it a big secret from the guys here on Comp Diesel!!!!!

There are 3 ways you can do it but takes quite a bit of work. You either have to find a 2001 (not a 2001.5 because they went to disks) Dana 80 and swap it for your current Dana80 (some minor maching with just a grinder on the outer edge of the drum will give you enough clearence to put the Dually rim over it (I found that the 2001 and down rims worked better).

The reason the 2001 breaks work is because they are a 12" brake...not a 13" but the pads are 3 3/4" wide and not 3" wide like the 13" units

Your other option is to find just the brake assembly from the 2001-Dana80 and you also need the hubs from it (not easy to find or get a hold of) as they have a different back spacing than the older axles (3/4" further away from the pumking per size). This envolves pulling the axles and just swaping the brake assembly...a few hours of work. then just grinding down the drum a little.

The last way to do it and the one my brother did on his....was he found a brake assembly off of a 2001 Dana70 (Much more common) the Everything size wise is identical as the Dana80's. BUT although he tried the hubs from the 70 they wouldn't work. Looked at buying hubs for the 2001 80 but they were 450 each. Anyway, what he landed up doing was putting the break assembely on the axle and then making up a 3/4" thick spacer that slid over the hub and spaced the drum just like the 2001 hubs.

All in all it was a hell of alot of work and not really sure if its worth it to do it to anything but a 2001 Dana 80 axle. The reason his parking brakes don't work yet is because he just needs a longer mid section as the 2001 cables on the brake assembly are about 12" shorter than the 2000 and down axles.

we put 70 drums on an 01 disk 80, and the rims would not clear the drum.

Bret i had to gut my drums on mine towards the end of the season to be able to run out west with duals on. Needing four wheel brakes on a 4x4 pulling truck is crazy unless you drive on the street. The way Ryanb did it is the best way but it is alot easier to buy four 17" wheels off a 03 or newer dually they should go right on with out any trouble i have seen a few trucks running the newer wheels

yea ill have to look into the 17" wheels because i have a freind with the same tires with about the same amount of tread that i was going to use on the 16's

thanks for all the info guys
