When driving my '00 Ram today, the tach dies throws Code -1693. While driving the truck with the dead tach I notice a large loss of power. Could a bad cam sensor cause a loss of power and (a little)harder starts, without throwing any other codes? Or could I have a poor ground to the ECM? Could The ECM be faulty? Or is it something totaly different?
Any help will be appreciated, Thanks.

you have a crank sensor not a cam sensor. and check to make sure the injection pump harness is plugged in tight

Mine acted like that when my cam sensor took a poo-poo... I have an 01 FWIW

That thing is a bear to get to BTW...hope you have small hands.

the pump harness is good checked it tonight, And there is a cam sensor under the pump. I can feel it but cant get to it good enough to look at it:bang

I Put one in my '01 this summer with the pump on. I just took my time and called it bad names.

Would the cam sensor trigger the relay for the lift pump?

where is the crank sensor located? Just in front of the starter?

The crank sensor is behind the starter right in the side of the block and the 98.5-2000 have both Cam & Crank sensors. 01-02's just have the Cam sensor.

I think Its something with one of those two.

do either one of the sensors trigger the power to the lift pump tho? I dont wanna run it with out any supply pressure.

The ECM powers the lift pump. The crank sensor determines where #1 TDC is on the 98/5-00, the can sensor determines it on the 01-02.

If the ECM doesn't know the engine is running (no signal from cam/crank sensor), it won't power the lift pump. After I did my conversion, I would have to pop the hood to shut the truck down manually. After the engine stopped with the fuel shut off lever, the lift pump would shut off, even with the key still in the run position.

thanks

Thank you guys for your input! Been thinking it is the crank sensor, the tach works when the engine is cold and starts dieing as the engine warms up. But why would it cause the loss of power? I will try to get new sensors installed soon and see if it works. Does anyone have information on the code P 1693? Thats the only code I have come up.:thankyou2:

What did you scan the truck with? if you used a programmer it will not read throughout the whole system.
Use a Snap-on scan tool to look at everything

here is the code description

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine
control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC
Detected in ECM
A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM

Well why is that you turn the key to the ON position and the lift pump runs for about 2 seconds, bump the starter and it'll run for 25 seconds, both without the engine running?

i had the same with my truck the other day the check engine light comes alive and then it has nothing for power when i floor it,the tach goes to zero, and when i shut it down the truck wont start agian so the other day in the wal-mart parking lot i disconnected positive terminals to reset it and it started and it went back to normal agian but the check engine light still stayed on prolly because all the codes i threw but is that what my truck prolly has is the crank sensor? wasnt replaced to long ago

When my crank sensor went bad the tach would drop to zero, CEL came on, and the truck start loping real bad especially coming to a stop it would act like a manual not pressing the clutch
