Must have been a recalled assembly that made it through the cracks. I'd take it back and see if the numbers match up.

The most effort realized by the steering system is in low speed maneuvering, that's why most break "going through a parking lot". I don't think any have failed traveling down the road.

Recalled assembly or you tightened it down to hard and weakened it and it snapped.

Bingo. During alignment it appears to have been torqued too tight. Thanks guys. I believe it's about 50-70 ft/lbs with the locknut.

My recalled tie rod end broke changing lanes at 20mph on 1960 in Humble....

Shot me across two lanes of traffic... Talk about a fun ride..:umno:

Why would anyone torque that nut during alignment?

Surely to line up my steering wheel I guess, he'll maybe it was me but I don't recall tightening it tighter than hand tight.

Pretty sure that's what the little doohickey with the two bolts that the tie rod end threads into is for. Might be a reason it's called an adjustment sleeve. :D

man that does suck glad it didnt happen on the highway. just get rid of the ball joints and do the cross over steering

had to have been me then, lol this time i tightened it enough for the nut to be firm but too not bad, drove it about 35 miles and as a pulled out of work it thumped so checked it-- it was loose lol good thing i keep my tools in the truck. ill torque it down nice and proper tomorrow morning before i head back out, does 70 sound right?

I do suspension work almost every day and never torque that kind of stuff, just hit it with the impact and keep rolling I've never had anything like that happen, I'd say its a defect for sure .
