Just picked up a 98.5 24v 3500 QC 4x4. I plan on using it as my daily driver and tow truck. Trans is shot and was told the engine is coating the underside of the truck with oil from the blowby. Plans for the trans are stock rebuild kit, transgo shift kit, and some type of single disc converter. Engine plans are new rings, bearings, oil pump, water pump, all gaskets and seals. This is all a budget rebuild and am doing all it myself. I work at a cummins dealer so I can get all the engine parts at cost. Any advice or recommendations on rebuilding either and parts? Thanks Raymond

zstroken on here had/has a single converter for sale, not sure if he sold it yet or not. anything you can't get at your work, just look around on here. since your on a budget i would buy as much stuff used (but in good condition) as you can to help cut down on cost. Good luck with the revival

IMHO, I'd figure out why the engine has blowby before tearing it apart. Trans may be able to be fixed depending on what is wrong with it too.

Truck has 233k on it and neither have been touched internally. Trans fluid was almost black and burnt and would only move sometimes. I have already pulled the trans and engine. One thing I found that I didn't like was on the intake system on the truck there is a spot to put the filter minder in but the guy never swapped it from the factory box to this one so who knows how long it has been sucking dirt in the intake.

I would do a stock rebuild, for the most part. Maybe a towing cam. Studs in the head. Exhaust manifold. I know you are on a budget but i would def. put a cam in it. Know more than what they cost, you'd be crazy not too.

Go ahead and get a good valvebody, the transgo kit is an improvement over stock no doubt, but I think you would be surprised how inexpensive a good VB is. Call Garmon, get a price, I think you will rethink the transgo.
