I'm going to rebuild my engine in a few months for the 1st time and have some questions and comments.

99 Dodge
5.9L 24v.
5-spd 4x4
freshly rebuilt HTT 64/14
150 dragonflow 10 holes
1/8 cross-over tubes
stock block basically.
stock head studs, cam etc
never had any additives.

230K on this engine lots of blow by and losing compression rapidly.
down to 11 mph all hwy.
I'm also just curious to know what this motor is all about on the inside.
I've noticed a very small knock, I'm the only one that can hear it.

So I may upgrade my cam and change rings bearings etc..

I just want some input on cost, problems I may run into, what other upgrades I would want to do etc..

Thanks guys, Cody Albrecht

a rebuild kit is around $700-800, then a couple hundred more for machining (depending on who you go to). so $1500 would be a little high for a stock rebuild. a cam would add around $1000 more; cam, valve springs, retainers, etc.

as far as skill wise, its pretty straight forward. pretty simple motor. but it all depends on your previous experience. on a scale of 1-10, how mechanically inclined are you?

You can get a cam and springs for $500... I actually have $199 in mine, lol. You can do a basic rebuild for less than a grand if you shop around. If you want all Cummins parts contact member Snedge on here

Enterpriseengine.com sells a complete rebuild kit for $850 and then your machining of course. And depending on if your head has any cracks it would be around $1000-1200. I have heard their parts are just as good as cummins parts. I have a buddy that just rebuilt his this last spring with that kit and it runs great one of the smoothest running 24v's I've ever heard. He also put in some sdx injectors and a small twin setup thow too. I'm going to rebuild mine in a few months also and that's Wat I have come up with. Anyone heard anything bad about enterprise engine parts?

I also hear a small knock and ticking noises that knowbody else can hear any ideas on Wat it is?

Call Mumau Diesel. Use Clevite bearings, McBee pistons, aftermarket gaskets but a CUMMINS head gasket! ;)

sounds expensive. When I rebuilt mine i reused the valve cover gasket the head gasket was a felpro front gear housing, front gear housing cover, power steering pump to gear housing, vp44 to gear housing, girdle to block, and oil pan to girdle i used the orange high temp gasket that you can find at a local parts store. I did replace the front and rear main seals with cummins parts. Also while your digging in this deep you might as well fire ring the head and stud it if you plan on modin your truck moderatly and up.$.02

Thanks for the input, all of you.
1-10 id say 9. I can probably get it all done with the help of a friend or two,
I'm just mainly concerned about what needs to be looked at and changed out while I have it out and the cost. I wasn't expecting numbers this low.
I was thinking around $2,000.

I'm sure some more questions will come up as I begin the rebuild and really get into it.

Somethings just not right and its not going to get better til I know for sure whats causing it. turbo's spooling slower these days, big deep lope when I start it in the mornings, white to gray smoke, then when the cylinders finally get their mixture, it runs fine and smooths out.

Sound like rings to you guys?? what else could be wrong? (injectors are clean, new fuel filters, no fuel leaks, O-rings are good on cross-over tubes)
I'm pretty sure its more major than these little things)

Actually no I shop around for the BEST prices...and I'm currently building a 2.6 motor and have been shopping around at a lot of places. So I figured since he was asking I'd pass along the advice! ;)

You can use Fel Pro gaskets for anything EXCEPT the headgasket in mine, and SEVERAL others well respected peoples opinions. I know guys who use hi temp silicone also to save money...and if your not worried about a small leak here or there hey GO FOR IT!

However my block has been cleaned and will be freshly painted when it goes back in so I'm planning using gaskets everywhere to keep it looking nice.

Also Cody since its a street truck avoid Fire Rings and go with O rings. Fire Rings are for compeition vehicles that don't see constant heat cycles on a daily basis, they WILL fail under that stress search here for the topic. I've used O rings for the last 6 years with my 97 as a hot street truck and a 2.6 puller and never had them fail. I'm considering Fire Rings now that its a trailered pulling truck though.

I waitin on my Fel Pro HG to FEL:doh:. I was in a bind with money and had to take the cheap way out even Fel Pro head bolts. Oh well though when it does go this time it's gettin ringed and studded.

Have you pulled the head yet? I would check for cracks and get the head rebuilt. More often than not, the head is junk, but the bottom end is fine. Been there myself a few times. Could do a leak down test prior to ripping and tearing. Just did a 03 CTD yesterday, all the intake valves were toasted/burnt out.

I'm gonna attempt a compression test Sat.
What is normal on these engines?
is there a trick to getting a spark plug fitting to adapt to my injector threads... any house hold fitting tricks or do I have to make my own end?
