engine running rough

My friend brought his 99 24v by yesterday claiming that it was running funny. After looking at it I noticed that the engine had a shake in it at idle. When you turn the a/c on it goes away and then comes back. It sounds like it has a misfire in it. I also noticed a high pitched chirping noise that comes and goes. It seems that the misfire will come and go but never sets a cel. Has anyone delt with this problem? I done a search but didn't come up with anything definative. His truck is stock with no program or chip. It has about 150,000 miles on it. I am thinking injector or injector pump. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
check for engine codes. turn key on and off 3 times and it will show all the codes thrown in the odometer.
 
Key trick wont work on 99. Take it to Autozone and get the codes pulled.
 
pop off pressure is off in one of the injectors.... get them pop tested, very inexpensive fix.

If you have a vocational school somewhere within driving distance you can probably take it to the diesel mechanics calss and you could get them to pull your injectors and check the pop off pressure as a class project. The best part about it is they probably won't charge you anything because they don't need to purchase anything to do it, if they do charge you it won't be much at all.
 
Well, I guess that I will pulll the injectors out and find someone to pop test them for me. Thanks for all the help.
 
I would take it and get the codes pulled before i spent the time on pulling the injectors.
 
i had it before on mine when it would idle after driving it, the dealership put in a new cranksensor idk wat exactly that does but it stopped it and it kinda does it from time to time but not as bad
 
Run a bottle of Power Service diesel conditioner through the tank before you start wrenching on it. My idle has been HORRIBLE for almost 6 months. It comes and goes, lopey, smooth, etc. I dump a half bottle in half a tank yesterday and it runs smooth as a babies butt. WTF? I guess I got junk in my fuel system somewhere. Cheap to try. $.02
 
Just an update, ended up having 3 bad injectors, replaced all 6 and now it runs like a top. Thanks for all the help
 
Glad to hear you got it fixed! I milked mine along for a long time on additives. I ended up replacing IP and injectors. Looks like you got off cheaper. :D
