excessive smoke

I put a 94 12v in my 04 superduty and I haven't been able to get rid of the smoke. The work I have done to the engine is:
90hp Contagious Diesel injectors
Timing bumped up to 18*
4K gov springs
hardened valve springs
Fuel plate grinded flat
loosened the AFC and smoke screw adjustment
HX35 turbo

I don't mind some smoke but This thing is is going to get me in trouble. when the turbo spools past 10lbs, it clears up and is just a slight haze, but anything before that, if you get on it a little more than normal, its solid black smoke. I do not have my AFC adjusted to any particular boost level. I've gone back as much as 3 full turns on the smoke screw with very little effect. I do oil analysis on my engines and it comes back high in chrome so I wonder if its piston rings or maybe cam? if my cam or rings are worn enough to cause excessive smoke, would there be away to adjust the pump to reduce it?

Thanks guys!

done anything with the cam? oversize head gasket? checked valve lash?
what DVs are in there?
Not much you can do to clear idle haze from larger DVs or injectors. off idle the afc will work.

Where is your fuelplate located? Full Forward? Id put the plate 1/4 forward and try that. That is alot of fuel for a HX35.

If your afc isn't full back then you won't get it to not smoke. Make sure that it is then your starwheel adjustment will work.

How far is the smoke screw/pre boost fuel in past the 10mm nut on the back? try backing it out further. then tighten back down the starwheel

Scat: I turned the AFC in almost 2.5 turns and there is deff not as much smoke now, most just a thickish haze...

BowtiedCTD: The fuel plate is all the way forward.

Wildman6bt: What you mean by full back?

95cummins5.9: Not sure, I'll have to measure it tomorrow. It's pretty far out though...

If you do the afc mods for full travel then you shove the afc back towards the fire wall. If your afc is full forward towards radiator then your afc adjustments are not going to work. Meaning its like its not on there. So make sure the afc is shoved back all the way. Then if your truck is hard to start turn the "smoke screw" in till it starts without hitting the throttle. Then if you have smoke until 10lbs then you tighten the "starwheel" till it is to your liking. Been there fought this! LOL

If I remember correctly, I have my AFC all the way forward and when I just tightened the starwheel 2.5 turns, it cleared the smoke up completely...

WFO its going to smoke no matter what.

Heat and Stretch your AFC spring, set it for full fuel at 25 psi. Back out pre boost then go read beginners thread on CF on how to tune pre-boost screw. If there are no leaks or other issues it will solve your issues.
