exhaust manifold bolts/spacers

what is the purpose of the spacers on the exhaust manifold bolts? can you replace them with shorter bolts and ditch the spacers?

I used arp manifold studs. Alot easier to install the exaust manifold that way.

I ditched for smaller bolts on an OE manifold. Works fine.

regular studs work fine. think they cost me like $20 with the nuts.

throw the spaces in the trash.

I replaced mine with short allen head bolts. Been fine that way for 5 years.
