Hey Guys, just wondering if anyone has got quotes or firm prices on having a sheet metal rear end built? Starting a new project here and just calling around up here in Ontario and found one guy but the price seems way higher than I think it should be.

Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks in advance...RyanB

Call Barker chassis they make them, im tring to remember but $5k seems to be stuck in my head

yeah, thats what I was thinking....this price was over 8K for it!!! seems like alot of $$$

Weight especially with the 172 they are huge and weight a bunch. Not sure exact weight but alot and they hold a lot of oil which adds more weight.

two people can easily cary a sheet metal housing assembled. you would drop your nuts trying to cary a full 172.

172 and scs internals then sheet metal setup would be the superb setup in weight. Keep in mind for every pound shed on the rear is 3lbs of movable weight out front

There not that heavy with 2K hanging on the front, the wife and I can push the rear end over on the trailer :)

:what:

Maybe im not thinking about this right but if my truck tips the scales at 8000lbs and i put scales under all 4 corners and then cut 300lbs out of the rear of the truck your saying i can then add 900 more pounds to the front? I believe it should be 300 since that is what was removed.

I think he was refering to weight on the front axle that gets multiplied from being so far from the axle centerline vs. being the axle.

sounds like some of the 4x4 Blower trucks.....cant back up to the sled sometimes because when they put it in reverse the whole truck jumps sidways from the torque......i picked the rear of one up and put it on the scales at a pull.....its weird being able to pick the whole rear of a truck up......

Ryan sent you a Pm with a phone no.A freind of mine make sheetmetal housings.

Im just starting to fab up the H172 in the truck and ill tell you, it has to weigh in the neighborhood of 1300 lbs. It lifts the rear tires on the skidloader trying to move it. The fabed rears are nice but the cost means its reserved for the bigger budget builds. I can find better places to put the extra $7k... Im just going to deal with the rediculous weight and shed pounds elsewhere.

With these big rearends, sheetmetal or not, with no rear suspension, how are the attached? Bolted in somehow or welded in? If welded to the trusses frame or tube frame, what do you do if the housing or tubes bust for some reason? Surely they're just bolted in? That'd be bad to hafta cut them out in the event of a failure!

In most cases they are welded in. Your tube frame trucks they bolt in but i cant remember ever hearing that a housing has failed, im sure they have but not very common and if a housing was to fail you have alot bigger problems then just figuring out how to get the rear unwelded or unbolted from the frame.

You will find that in probably 99% of the trucks the axles are welded directly in to the frame giving everything even more strength. Now, when dealing with component tractors (Pro-stocks, unlimited super stocks) and what not...these sheet metal rear ends are usually bolted in place. Here is a cool great website giving alot of detail on the rear ends and everything thing else as well as some tripple charge setups and some amazing engine and air flow mods...worth a few minutes time to check it all out.
