I am about to replace the rear main seal, oil pan gasket, front main seal, timing cover, timing case and then also install a new dowel pin and a Cummins block stiffener.

Basically I was wondering if anyone could help me out on the torque specs for the oil pan bolts with a stiffener plate, the bolts that hold the rear main retainer plate on and the timing case and cover bolts. I don't have a manual foir the truck and need to get it going again ASAP.

Also any tips for installing the stiffener plate? Looks like it will be a pita to hold it up while getting the bolts started.

Oh and also I think while I am doing all this fun stuff I want to add a bolt-on gear retainer. I am capable of fabbing my own but I was wondering if it would make a difference if I drilled and tapped the cam snout with the gear already on VS. without?

Thanks for any help ya'll, and if you guys have any suggestions let me know!

Do you plan on doing this with the engine in the truck?

please say no.

Yup, will pull the tranny first to do the rear main, put the tranny back in. Then remove the front of the truck (intercooler, etc.) lift the engine as high as I can. Do the oil pan gasket and stiffener plate. Then set the engine back in to do all the front seals and gaskets. I know it will be a lot of work but I have no other choice.

I don't have the funds to pay to have it done and don't have the time to save up to do so. I am driving a car right now with no AC everyday because my truck leaks to much oil. I am capable of doing all the work and have done all these things before (except stiffener and drilling a cam) I just have to do them all at one time this time.

18# on the timing case and cover bolts

Stock oil pan is also 18# don't know if that changes with the plate though...

I couldn't find specs on the rear main plate in the manual. IIRC you can just pry the old seal out and pop the new one in.

And guys, Chris is a Texan. Tell us we can't and we'll find a way!:D

Drilling the cam in the engine is a BAD idea.

You already have every thing out. Just pull the engine.

You can do your oil pan gasket without lifting the engine if you do it when the tranny is out. It will drop low enough that you can unbolt the oil pickup and slide it out the back.

I am putting in a fresh timing case gasket, the one between the timing case and block. So I am pulling the cam out (no big deal) so I can drill it on my big drill press or see if my neighbors machine shop would do it for me.

I would like to pull the engine, infact I would LOVE to. My two best friends are diesel mechanics and they tell me all the time they will help me freshen the engine up if I ever want to. Problem is if I am going to pull the engine I will do it right with all new bearings, hone, etc and I just can't swing that. Heck I don't even have an engine lift! Lol I will be using a floor jack on the dampener most likely to lift the engine high enough to do the gasket...:bang

Thanks Nick for the torque specs! I am thinking the retainer plate will probably be the same 18# since the bolts are the same size as those others.

Well I have another problem, I have had to drive the truck the last two days because I totalled my mom's car (which I was borrowing while I got my truck ready) on my way home in a bad turn :-( .

While driving the truck it is not charging the batteries, turns out one of them is completely dead, as in bit the bullet lol. So I charged the other one up and checked all the battery wires which seemed to be good.

I will take the alternator off and go get it tested but is there anything that is a more simple and/or common problem?

....new thread, "How I totaled my Moms car" ya got'a do it man,,,, ya got'a do it!

Na I'm good, lol. It is a turn that around here claims 1-5 cars literally everytime it rains. The day I crashed 3 people wrecked within 3 hours, one was directly after mine and nearly plowed over me and the state trooper...

Ok I had the alternator tested and it PASSED. Any ideas? While I drive in the area of the gauge cluster where the Tach is I have a light that reads "GEN" that came on, whats that mean?

Two questions...... is this your first truck?

Did you check the GROUND? I don't mean on the battery....

Who passed it?

I had a bad starter once that Orilleys said was good. Tested it 4 times. I took it apart, it was TRASHED!

That light is something in the charging system not working.

ECM?

No it is not my first truck, the first truck to force me to work on nearly every weekend yes lol.

I am not some 17 year old highschool kid that "mommy and daddy" bought a truck for, I am 21 and paid for this thing myself, just like my ATV.

And the ground wires that come off of the battery seemed to be good down to where they ground, I will have to get a better look tomorrow.

Vato-Zone passed it, I had never had a problem with the charging until I drove it for the first time in nearly two months which was the other day.
