Firewall insulation

I was wondering if anyone has ripped out the firewall insulation and how the noise was in the cab?

I'm sick and tired of trying to pull the valve cover without 1/2 the junk from the insulation falling into the engine. The whole insulation thing is falling down, so it sits pretty close to the cover as well.

I ripped off the hood one cause it was falling down, didn't notice anything on that.

Doesn't seem to be much if any worse since I lost mine, been meaning to go back with some dynamat or similar..one day :bang

I just cut out the piece above the engine, no difference in noise. Can a Cummins get any louder?

I was thinking of putting the Home Depot dynamat, but I think to really to do a good job, you'd have to pull the engine and all the stuff mounted to the firewall.

I tried putting some foil tape to the area that's really chewed up from the valve cover, but it didn't stick enough to hold it up. Thought about putting some screws, but I'm not sure what's behind everything.

I'm not sure if mice ate it up, or what but the hood liner was the same way. It's like whatever makes it stiff isn't there anymore and it acts almost like a blanket now.

I think on the later 2nd gens (late 01 and 02) they didn't have the insulation, or maybe not as much?

My roomate bought a 2002 2500 a couple years ago before I moved away and I remember driving it and thinking it was quite a bit louder in the cab compared to my truck.

WHAT DID YOU SAY? :hehe:

We have a Ford gasser van at work and I have crashed that starter I don't know how many times cause you can never tell it's running. I am so used to the truck shaking and making some noise!

Joe pulled all the insulation off my firewall for my Cummins conversion. It looks a ton better for sure.
If you're gonna use dynamat or similar...put it on the inside of the firewall. I have 2 layers there already so hopefully it won't be too loud. No asphalt based sound deadener or vibration dampener is gonna stand up to the heat of a turbo and downpipe for too long...it'll just melt. There are other products that will work better if you want it in the engine compartment.

Pull it off. I did, and I cannot tell a difference. Some Dynamat or Hushmat would help more than that stock stuff, anyway.

Rip that stuff out. It wont get loud till you get the insulation from inside the cab.

Yes, I am in need of ear plugs in my truck, but thats another story.

I removed the all the firewall insulation when I did the head gasket and studs, I noticed a little more noise, got quieter when I put the SO VP on.

I am going to pull it out. I think I can deal with a little extra noise vs having to look at the falling insulation and plus the hassle with it when pulling the valve cover.
