What exactly is a flywheel shield that meets the SFI spec 6.3? Can I buy one or make one?

im guessing they are referring to a bellhousimg blanket, if it says SFI required you can not make it.

Below is the Spec from the SFI Website:

Containment Bellhousing for SFI 1.2 greater than two disc Clutch Assemblies used on naturally aspirated vehicles or SFI 1.1 & 1.2 Clutch Assemblies used on supercharged/nitrous injected vehicles

From the NADM Rules for Sledpulling:

Flywheel shield(Clutch Containment Bellhousing) labeled as meeting minimum SFI Spec 6.3 or greater. Applications for which an SFI Spec flywheel shield is not available may use a properly attached SFI 4.1 or 4.2 blanket that completely covers the bell housing; it must be attached to the block and extend rearward to the transmission with a minimum six inch overlap where it is fastened.

You CAN NOT manufacture one of these types of bellhousings as they are certified as SFI 6.3. If you are unable to locate the certified housing then follow the direction as provided in the NADM Rules.

Eric

Exactly. The whole reason for SFI was so that testing could be established to prevent variances in manufacturing and safety tolerances. SFI spec components have all earned their stickers with rigorous fault testing. They work hard to make sure SFI = Safe.

Many manufacturers have stepped up to the plate for us diesel folk, but if you do have trouble finding an SFI spec component, make it known. NADM and others can help you source one.
