well just got my valair dual disk 3850 clutch in and drove it for the first time. The pedal pressure is a little more than stock but still not bad but the thing i dont like is how hard it goes into gear, its almost like the clutch isnt releasing fully? I didnt remove the washer behind the pivot ball if that matters. I cant get it in reverse unless i turn off the truck and put it in then. Any ideas?

not sure what hub it is i didnt specify when ordering was just sent a 3850 valair DD with 12 ceramic button plates..96000 on tranny shifted like butter before putting this clutch in..

rattle and chatter yes..grinding?? not so sure if its so much a grinding noise perhaps a little

man, I don't know what to tell ya...

I put a sprung hub dual disk in my 98... tranny shifted like BUTTER before I put it in. I installed it and couldn't shift any faster by pressing the clutch pedal than NOT pressing the pedal. It was a 175k mile tranny, but it shifted perfect.

I pulled the DD and put a single disk in it, and it shifted a ton better, but never shifted the same :( :( :(

I have a solid hub 6 puck DD in my '04, and it shifts so fast and smooth, it's hard to believe it's a dual disk!!!

all the extra mass on the input shaft makes for slower shifts. If I ever buy another dual disk, it will be a solid hub... I don't care how much noise it makes!

many people don't have any problems, but I have talked to another person that has.

probably not what you wanted to hear :o

I upgraded to a SBC 3600 & SBC hydraulics from a stock single and I did notice slower shifting. I cannot 'row through the gears' like you can with a single...

solid hub drag clutch from SBC shifts awesome! sadly, it shifts 100x better than my NV4500 in my 98 with a single disk!

yoshi470,
Do you have a short-throw shifter installed by any chance?

Regardless, try hitting 3rd right before you go over to reverse and see if that helps.

Well, reverse on the 4500 is not synchroed, i usually put it in 4th first to stop the spinning then go to reverse. This goes for my powerparts eng clutch and my brothers sbc dd. 2ng gear on mine goes right in, but if i try to put it in first from standstill, it dont want to go. Tim

Break the clutch in for awhile, it will shift easier, but will never shift as fast as a single disc.

well i figured just to remove the washer to make sure it was right instead of fighting it later down the road. Still in the process of putting everything back together so i will let you guys know it works once i get it back together

My truck had a hard shift & I took it to ADT to have it fixed. He had to cut the shift fork somehow to gain clearance & removed the washer. The truck now shifts & feels like a stock clutch, no joke. I don't know what he did, but it worked.

I was under the belief that the Dodge HD nv4500's the reverse was synchroed, but in the Chevy nv4500 it wasnt

My truck goes into reverse hard also, I just put it in 2nd or 4th before reverse. Id try getting some upgraded hydraulics if you dont already have them. that is what is on order for my truck.

So, washer in or out? I am putting my Valair DD in tomorrow, and I need to know what to do. No instructions were provided. Thanks!

I don't know about Valair, but I would think it will need to come out for proper clearance. I would also check to see if Valair recommends modifying the clutch fork like ADT did to mine. It is unreal how my truck shifts now.

Dan recomends you take out the washer. He also said you can bend the fork in a press to get a little more movement.

Mine is slow shifting. 1st and reverse are a little tough but nothing bad. You gotta love that solid hub whine.:woohoo:

JSPulliam21: make sure you put the starter spacer on BEFORE the flywheel goes on.
