Hey Guys. Just wondering if any of you NV4500 Guro's could help me figure out where a little spring 1/4" round and maybe 3/4" long came from that was in the bottom of my tranny I picked up for the new pull truck we are working on. I believe its from 3rd and 4th gear as two of the little steel plates under the collar feel like there is a spring under them and one doesn't...if thats the case though I have no idea how it managed to come out as the spring is in perfect condition and there is nothing else in the bottom of the trany or the oil.

If thats the case and indeed where its from...seeing its not on a daily driver anyone see why it wouldn't be okay for a puller. Running 3rd low, 2nd high and if I jump the gears to 5:13's then 4th low.

Thank in advance...Ryan

that is where the spring came from, it may have not seated in all the way last time it was taken apart or something.
Couldn't one move the shift ring thing off the steel things and put the spring back in?

Sounds like a detent spring for a blocker ring lock - should be 3 of them.

yeah, figured out thats it where it is supposed to be...not sure how it managed to get out. And the way it looks I can't get it back in with out taking the whole thing appart...for just pulling am I going to need it?????

I wouldn't use the tranny 'til you find the missing detent block and re-inserting both it and the spring back into the slot... not sure if it can be done without splitting the case, though.

thats the thing...the block is still in the stock location...just that the spring that is supposed to be under it is now in my hand and looks mint!

Was it rebuilt? (extra spring in sump)

Or can you see the spring under the block is missing?

From what I can tell its a rebuilt. Picked it up a few years ago with a truck as a spare and never touched it. Got ready to put it in the puller so I pulled the tower to just have a look-see and make sure everything was normal...when I took the cover off the spring was sitting right on the top of the gears.

The spring is missing from one of the 3 small blocks in the 3-4gear area.
