Fuel demon found me...

driving home the other day I went to down shift to a stop (manual trans) between shifts the truck would idle way down 200 rpms and then surge back up. (Normal clogged filter diagnosis) got a lil worse on the way home. went from barely noticeable to the point that I struggled to keep it running at an idleing stop. Changed both of my fuel filters and had heck starting it. (rare for me) So I tried a gas rag... would fire on fumes but wouldnt prime. cracked lines went through that process etc. nothing. so I had a buddy pull me. finally started after a whopping 3/4 mile. then died shortly after. popped clutch again and fired up. drove 2 or 3 miles pretty hard. ran good 3/4 throttle, very smooth and no sputtering until I would take my foot off the pedal. it would try to die. (sorry for the long story btw) any ways, got back home, took the filter off the side of my frame (not factory) and replaced it with a working holley blue. hooked it up to "key on" and now it will start on a gas rag but idles EXTEMELY ragged. very wild lope. almost dies and pulls itself back up hard, blows lots of smoke when the RPMs rise during this lope. I do still have my stock lift pump in working order where it belongs btw. never had any problems with it. either if I gradually accelerate or floor it it pops and crackles blowing suit wads and smoke rings out of my stacks. brown smoke, gray smoke, white smoke etc. I have great fuel comming from the tank to holley, from holley to lift pump, and lift pump to VP. This scares me. the closer I get to the engine the higher the "fix it" bill gets. NO CODE out of ordinary thrown though... big question. I pray that there is an electrical somethin or other I have over-looked... Cause I really dont want to point my finger at that VP.... Please, any helpful advice/comments will be greatly appreciated. thank you, Cody (sig is up to date)

have seen drag comp cause this. disconnect drag comp and see if that changes anything.

Make sure you didnt get a bad batch of fuel. My buddy just got some up here that looked like lemonade...

I had a similar problem with my comp when I had it but my problem was caused by a poor connection at the vp.

Get a gauge hooked up that you can see, I just got reminded of the importance of one myself today, a clogged fuel filter will make these trucks do all kinds of weird crap and the only way to tell it is a gauge on the inlet to the VP.

Vp junk mine did the same exact thing gray smoke black smoke radical idle new pump fixed it

Thanks for all the replies. Drag comp may be doing it... I'm getting all kinds of fuel all the way to my VP. I loosened both the in and out banjo bolts on top of the water fuel seperater individually of course and sprays fuel everywhere very consistantly. Stock lift pump is working awesome. I finally got it started today just long enough to crack # 1,3 & 5 lines at the head and it squirted one time out of each line and shuttered down to die. So the drag comp. I'm going to unplug it from the tap at the VP and unplug it from inside the cab. I'll try a couple combinations and see what happens. (3 years of drag comp not a single flaw) and fuel is great. I filled up a large glass bowl with my holley and its very clean. this is located about 5" from my 1st filter so it came straight from the tank. Not bad fuel. no water specles on the bottom or any grit.

aside the d-comp is there any possibility it could be like a shut of cylinoid or something of that nature. I'm not positive where the "key on fuel on" brains are on these 24 valves. But that being said once I get it lit it'l stay lit til it starves itself again. kinda rules out any electrical fuel shut off...

Bare with me guys I'm just really frustrated and trying to find every other option before I P-Pump this thing... And yes if the VP is dead I'm going 215 no doubt. I just dont wanna dish out the money right now. Thanks again, Cody

Tear down begins. Might have the money next week, might have it in 3 months... either way, I'm gonna start taking it apart right now. Wish me luck.
