fuel problem? p0216

So my dads 02 shuts off on him with an 1/8 tank. put 5 gallon in it and we get it running. It shows code po216 Is this just becuase the it ran out of fuel or is his pump going bad? He said he doesn't remember hearing it running when it shut off and was trying to start it back up
He has said that a few times in the past year he noticed that sometimes he would give it throttle and it felt like it didn't want to go for a second.
Stock except for a superchips. Which is really only for the mileage, Air filter and exhaust.
Truck has less than 60,000 miles on it.

The pump died... if it has the 0216 its on its death bed... i've seen pumps last a yr or so with the code but it gets occasional dead pedal and it WILL leave you sit sometime.

P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure.
High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible
wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

Well since it was run out of fuel, I guess #2 applies.

Fuel cools and somewhat lubricates the injector pump. Since it's winter, ya'll may have lucked out on the cooling issue but the lack of lubrication may show up some day.

A lift pump fuel pressure gauge lets you keep an eye on the fuel pressure gettting to the injector pump and when it's time to replace the fuel filter or lift pump.

My truck showed no trouble codes when the injector pump gave out on mine...jes' got harder and harder to start.
