Fuel Tank Problem

This is on my 01'.

I have never been able to fill my truck up the whole way since I got it due to a check valve (I think) at the top of the tank leaking. It hasn't been a problem until now, I am getting a water in fuel light alot of the time and I have been trying to drain it off every morning but now the drain thing isn't sealing right and I sprayed fuel all the way to work. i know how to replace the housing but what about the fuel tank stuff? What parts do I need? Where? $$$$? Any thing else I should replace since I will probably have to drop the tank while I am in there?

Very :( this morn.

Thanks guys!

I'd at least throw on a new fuel level sender while you are there. My '02 went out one me and I had to drop the tank to replace it. I think it was around $40. I'd do that while you are there. Dropping the tank isn't bad if you have at least two folks. At a minimum check the little circuit board traces on the sender and make sure they aren't worn real bad. Mine was wore to the point the pad separated from the board.

I will check the sender out and clean it. Hopefully it wont have to be replaced. My fuel gauge has always worked accurately, So I don't want to break whats working :bang

Remove spare if you have one and put on glasses are the main two. You will eat some dirt. :D They are easy to do. Take the filler stuff lose the losen the two bracket bolts. Set it on a jack because you will need to unplug the wires a little less than half way down. Other than that, I don't have much else. If I was closer I'd help ya.

I should have enough help. Hopefully. Thanks for the offer. I just need to find a good filter housing now. I posted in the wanted section. Hopefully I get a response.

Did you PM JHurst? I think I may have posted that in your thread but don't remember. I think he took an old one off something and was runing it under his bed for fuel from his aux tank. He no longer uses it. I know there was a pump under there and I think there was also a filter housing. Maybe not. Ask Justin. He may swing you a good deal on it if he has one.

I would pull the bed before dropping the tank, 8 bolts on the bed and a few harness to unplug. Then your not having to worry about empty tank and all.
My brother inlaw and myself lifted the bed off, my sister assisted us putting it back on.

That works well if you don't have a gooseneck hitch, an aux fuel tank, strobe light wires, trailer wire plug in the bed, etc. plus mine is a dually so that would suck. If you don't have anything but a stock bed and one person on each corner, absolutely, pull the bed. :D

That depends on the hitch, two people lifted the dually bed off of my friends truck. If you have all of the other stuff like a toolbox etc it could make it more challenging. I just know once the bed is off it is so easy to do everything. If you don't mind removing your extras don't be afraid of pulling the bed, an inmpact with an extension and about 25 minutes(or less) and the bed is ready to lift off. I even have stacks on mine and just undid the clamp where the stacks go up.

How much does the tank weigh with like 1/4 tank of fuel? I am almost to an 1/8th right now and I need to put about 4 gallons in this afternoon so it doesn't get too low. I case we dont get to work on it tonite. I just checked to drain thing again and apparently it just didnt seal right this morning when I drained it. So the truck is drivable but if I need to run it lower on fuel I can.

Me and one buddy dropped my tank, replaced the sender, and put it back in a little over two hours with 1/8 in it. $.02

Figuring a tank is 34 gallons so 1/8 is 4.25 gallons and using 8 pounds per gallon (water) would be 34 pounds plus the tank and junk. Not too bad. It will just shift on you if your not expecting it and you may pull a muscle trying to keep one end up with all the fuel in it. Keeping it level helps.

Ok. That sounds good. So lets see

Spare tire is removed.
Jacks and blocks for the rearend to get it up in the air so we can get under there better if needed.

So two bolts? I assumes its held in with straps right? Take out the bolts and the tank will fall? So have the jack underneath ready to go? Lower down and remove harness?

Then I have to see what all is wrong with it from there?

Sounds good on paper. Lets see how it goes down in practice. /bitesnails

The strap should be hooked into a slot on the frame rail side (drivers side) and there is one bolt holding each strap near the middle of the truck. Remove and drop. Piece-o- cake. The hardest part is getting your hands and arms up to detach the fuel lines and wires with the tank half way down. The wire harness has that POS red clip on it like the MAP sensor has. I freakin' hate those. They are easy when you can see them, but when reaching up there in the dark and doing it by feel, they can be a real beotch.

Droping tank is easy, alot easier then removing the bed. Nothing to it, use a floor jack and board under the tank.

Ended up removing the bed. The overhead air hoist made it easier but could easily be done with a couple of people. 6 bolts on my short bed and a couple of harness plugs. Turns out it is the fuel canister o-ring and the filter screen at the bottom of the canister. The whole assembly was loose and was letting dirt, grime, water whatever in. Replacing the filler neck hoses while we are in there. Sending unit looks good. Started a little after 9am yesterday and was done by 10:45am. Pressure washed everything off and got the canister cleaned out too. Parts should be in tomorrow.

Awesome. I'm getting air in the lines somewhere. I wish I could pull my bed that easy. Glad you got it ok.

Thanks, it was much easier than I thought it would be. My toolbox comes out with two bolts and it seems easier than it should have been.

Should I use locktight when putting the bed bolts back in?
