just as the title asks I wanted to know what garrett would be close to the 475. Just trying to explore my options for my primary, anybody have any input on the garretts thanks dave.

And tial has some neat stainless exhaust housings for them too.

I don't think they have a 1.32 A/R though. When I bought mine, the 1.0 A/R was the only one available, and the 1.15 A/R was coming soon.

The garrett gt4508r would be the closest. It flows more air and spools faster than a s475 but but costs $$$. You can get a 1.28 A/R for it. You can get the 1.28 A/R for the 4202 as well.

how much would you estimate it to cost? What would make it spool better than 475 is it the cartrige or just better design. Also is it harder to make into a primary on a twin setup than the 475. thanks dave

The gt4508r is a ball bearing charger. Any garrett number with an "r" on the end is ball bearing.

I am not certain how much, but is in the 2400 range. A good s400 is one third that cost and that is part of what makes them more attractive usually. It spools faster, significantly faster, and at a lower rpm due to the ball bearing design of the turbo. It is only harder to make into a primary for twins because most stuff now is designed around the s400's. However, if you are getting twins built for you, like from MPI for instance, it is not inherently more difficult to do. The Garretts do have some bastard sizes for outlets and things like that but is not a big deal.

I use a hybrid gt4518r as my primary right now. The gt4508r also makes an excellent primary for towing as well. I used a 1.15 A/R before and the primary would fully spool (about 40-45psi in twins setup) in about 1 and a half seconds. (count one thousand one, one thous.... spooled) That gt45 is really a terrific turbo... it is always the price that is the issue.

you could go with a k-31 which is a 71mm inducer with a 77 mm exducer with a 1.28 wastegated housing which is a little cheaper.

GT4508 is closer to an s480 if my recollection is right.

That is correct, in fact a the gt is a few lbs/min more. But add a race cover to the s480 and then it is a couple lbs/min more than the gt as far as I know. But the GT is still going to spool a lot faster and that's a quality sometimes more important than overall air; especially when you want to stay "ahead of" the egt curve.

yeah but remember guys he is looking for something close to a s475 not a s480.

Very true... I was just clarifying the post.

The gt4202r is about 92-93 lbs/min of air. The Gt4508r is about 113-115 IIRC.

Not sure where the s475 fits exactly, but it is in the middle of those two turbos.

Having run both the 4202 and the 45 as primaries in twins, the difference in spool is negligible compared to the air, so I always prefer the 45. But that is just me.

that just depends on what the truck is used for daily driver and weekend play toy the spool up is a little more important. truck that might see the road once or twice a week spool up isn't as important.

I think its 109lbs/min. So their both good choices, if you got the coin.
