Gear swap question

I'm swapping out my stock 3.54 gears in the rear and I called a local shop to get an install kit and the man said I needed to change out the carrier also for the 4.10 gears I am putting in. I don't believe it but wanted to check and see if he is right.

D60 and D70 axles? 4.10 and down are the same carrier.

D80 split is 4.10 and up I believe.

Post up you want to swap and I'll bet you can find someone to swap axle and all with you. Lots of folks want to get rid of the 4.10's and go to 3.54's.

d80 the split is 3.73.

2500 automatics had a 70. If that is the case you shouldn't need a carrier.

yea his is an auto so it's a 70.. I didn't know they were different then the 80 for carrier changes though. I do know I had to change the carrier on my 80 to jump up to 4.10's.. Definitely a good move! I can't go anywhere near as fast (top speed). But that is a very good thing for me. Towing ability made a huge jump.

If my truck doesn't sell this week on ebay I would be more than happy to trade you my 4:10 axles for your 3:54s.

Yeah I found out from good sources that the carrier is the same. Thanks guys. Also If I wasn't in such a time crunch with us moving to NC I would be more than happy to swap axles but I already have the gears and the install kit but now with a day to put them in and a couple to break them in before I put a load behind leaves me with only thinking that they will have to wait till I get to NC to do this. This was just a quick fix because I really want a d80 under it for when it is just my hauler for the next pulling truck.
