alright folks...its time to regear the pullin truck. Im having issues making up my mind. so im open for suggestions now! 4.88? or 5.13? or??? its a 2.8 truck with a scheid ag gov pump 5x.22 5spd with dual disc 16x10 with 33 12.50 sts tires
Help me if ya can.
Thanks, Tim

Usually the standard in a 2.8 class is 5.13's and run 4th low, Although I do know of a few running 4.88's so that they have a better spitter between 2nd high and 4th low for the different type sleds and tracks. What kind of RPMs are you seeing down the track, or in other terms, what is the engine capable of as far as power and rpms?

What gears are in the truck now? Josh Woodruff of Woodruff Diesel is making gears for the transmissions which you can change instead of the diffs. I am waiting on him to get the finial ones done and see what he can come up with. If they work that is the route I will go.

How long are we talking because I'm collecting pieces now to re-gear my puller for next year? What gears is he making replacements for? What will the new ratio be? Final drive?

If you pull the same gear & sled all the time then go 5.13's.

Myself, I am most likely going to 4.88's because we pull on several different length tracks and a couple different sleds so 4.88 will allow me to still be able to use 2nd hi if I want with my 5spd. 4.88 with 4th low is a faster final drive than 5.13 though, I have no experience with 2.8 turbo's maybe you might need the extra RPM of 5.13's?

Do you have any more information?

Figure out the wheel speed you want and go from there. There are a lot of variables that come into play when you say what gears you have. I sat down and plugged everything into a wheel speed calculator.

I am doing 4.88s with 33s and a 5spd. It calculates out to approximately the same wheel speed as a guy running 5.13s and 35s with the same trans.

The truck has the factory 3.55 gears with suck with my setup. I pulled on a loose track and a good sticky track this summer and with 3rd n 4th low, both tracks, it snuffed(fell under charger)....
The motor was freshend up this summer, but everything was put back basically stock except bottom end studs...as far as rpms go the pump is set for 5k but everyone knows itll do more than that. Im not real sure what the rpms are down track, bc im still using factory tach, but it goes well past 4k with the gauge needle almost straight up and down.
If it helps you guys a lil more, im running an s474 with a 1.10exhaust.
And if anyone could suggest a good brand of Tach....
Thanks alot, Tim

I spoke with Josh last week, and he currently only has stuff in the works for the NV5600. He has interest in doing the same for NV4500's, but he said some of the gears are made onto the main shaft and therefore it will be more difficult to manufacture.

Tim a lot of us have just swapped in a Gasser(6K RPM) gauge cluster. Do a search for the member "Teddybear" he did an writeup/video on his. I have one on my 97 as well. I have heard from a couple of people with Auto Meter tach's that they are pretty closely matched. Its a direct swap so there's nothing to fabricate. If you want something aftermarket, Stewart Werner offer's digital tach the size as the rest of our gauges, and they also offer a shift light style LED tach as well.

This coming from the man who has preached 5.13 for the past 2 years?!?!?!:aiwebs_013::eek::what::hehe:

I like big tires but the average Joe likes 33's which I would go with a 4.88 but a 35" or 36" tire I would run 5.13's. Alot of folks have made diffrent gears and tire set-ups work this is a hard subject to say this or that but mearly an opinion and I might have tried a few sets of tires in my day......

4.88 is my gear of choice, allways used them and allways will.you also get more tooth contact with the 4.88 so they last a bit longer.

Oh I wasn't calling you out bud, just picking on you. :shake:

You definately have more experience with trying gears & tires than me. I think everytime I've seen your truck in a magazine it's had different tires on it? LOL

Haisley says 4.88 for autos and 5.13 for manuals. 5.13s will give you a 14 final in 2nd high and a 13 in 4 low. Looser tracks run low and sticky tracks run high. with 3.55.s low 3rd is like a 16 final ( too slow) and 2nd high is 11 final low 4th is 10. I run the same turbo as OP and i tried high second at schieds and snuffed on takeoff. this was in the 2.6 class. i was running a 12mm pump that will turn 4500+ but i never look at gauges so i dont knpw what it did down the track. My plan of attack is to go 13mm pump and pick up approx. 1000 rpms and stretch 3rd low out for now. 35 inch bfg a/ts and i spun out at the end of both pulls.

that is too many numbers for me to remember. LOL. I believe your numbers but on the phone i thought van told me the 13 and 14 finals for 5.13,s. He said that5.13s would give you to good usable gears. I mentioned 4.10 and he said absolutly not. that it would not give me any good gear. 4.10 and 2nd high looks pretty good to me or 5.13 low 4th which is the better gear (direct) for the tranny.
